After the Second World War comes the age of autocrats. In Egypt, Abdel Hadi el-Gazzar creates a nationalist expressionism which manages to circumvent official censorship, while the painter Inji Efflatoun, a communist and feminist activist, is persecuted by the Nasser regime. As Syria and Iraq were shaken by coups d'état, many artists took refuge in Beirut, attracted by the cosmopolitanism that flourished there.
