Hungary elections: Is this the end of Orbán?

11 min

Available until 08/07/2026

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could be unseated after 16 years in power. Few EU leaders would miss him – for years, he’s been the black sheep of Europe, blocking key decisions and support for Ukraine. Domestically, he’s led a brutal crackdown on the judiciary, the media and the rights of minorities. With elections in other EU countries on the horizon, this election is being seen as a litmus test for Europe. Will right-wing populism triumph – or is this the end of the “illiberal democracy” in the heart of Europe?
