After over three years of war, the Ukrainian army is short on soldiers. Since May 2024, the country has been recruiting from prisons. Around 8,300 of the 37,000 prisoners in the country have joined the army. In exchange for a shortened sentence and a salary, these prisoners have joined assault units that are specialised in offensive operations. This units see the most losses in the Ukranian army.
