Pinocchio is the creation of Master Geppetto - and the imagination of Tuscan author Carlo Collodi (1826-1890). His book, published in 1883, has little in common with the 1940 film version by Walt Disney, because unlike the cheerful cartoon puppet, who would rather have fun than go to school, Collodi's Pinocchio comes to life in a cruel society where injustice and poverty reign.
