Since 2002, with the nationalisation of the oil industry by the Chavez government – a figureheadof Latin American socialism - Venezuela has experienced an unprecedented economic downturn, aggravated in 2006 by US sanctions. The crisis has forced people like Anibal to turn to other activities to survive, in his case fishing on the heavily polluted Lake Maracaibo.
