The trenches can be a lonely place, and for generations, soldiers have turned to cats for company and cuddles. The soldier and his cat is a classic trope of war photography. The photograph we're focusing on was taken on May 20, 2022 in Ukraine and was shared by President Zelensky himself on Instagram. Is this image a candid moment of tenderness in the midst of war, or a cynical piece of propaganda? Photographer Dogukan Keskinkilic gives us the inside scoop on his now famous picture.
