Every year, demonic creatures known as Krampus invade Austrian towns and villages around St Nicholas Day. These goat-headed bogeymen dressed in animal skins frighten onlookers, roughing up those who have been naughty with their walking sticks. Recently, these parades have sometimes been marked by violent outbursts. Is this an out-of-date practice? Or a tradition to be cherished?
