Jose Mario Bergoglio, born in 1936 in a suburb of Buenos Aires to a family of Italian immigrants, was the first Latin American pope. From the beginning of his papacy, he was committed to the rights of marginalised people, especially refugees although on the issue of reform of the Roman Catholic Church, he has largely disappointed reform-minded members.
