At the start of 2026, it was Cyprus' turn to take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months. However, the island has been split in two for over half a century. But hopes of peace and reunification have been sparked with the election of Tufan Erhüman, the new president of the Turkish republic of North Cyprus.
