We are in Greece, 5th century BC, in August and in the midst of the Greco-Persian wars. Xerxes and the Persian army are advancing towards Athens but they are met by Leonidas and his 300 Spartans who decide to fight to the death at Thermopylae. Does Jacques Louis David’s painting of the Spartans contain a hint of homoeroticism?
