On October 16, 2020, Samuel Paty, professor of history at the Conflans Sainte-Honorine college, was beheaded for showing cartoons of the Prophet in class. His murderer was a young Chechen born in Russia, who had been granted refugee status in France through his parents. In Russia, the murder provoked widespread sympathy.
