In the 1930s, as many opponents of the Nazi regime, a community of German writers and intellectuals made a home for themselves in a small corner of the South of France. Lion Feuchtwanger, Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, and Klaus Mann all lived and wrote on the Mediterranean coast at Sanary-sur-mer in an idyllic setting nevertheless tinged with anxiety about the future.
