In late July 2026, more than 70,000 people crossed the border between Morocco and Spain at Ceuta, either by swimming or on foot. The Spanish enclave is one of the main entry points into the European Union, particularly for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Border control is jointly managed by Spain and Morocco and there have been several crises in the past. Are irregular migrant crossings exploited as a geopolitical weapon?
