Berlin, early 1930s. Lissy, a working-class woman, hopes for stability when she marries Alfred, a clerk with modest ambitions. But after he is fired from his job, Alfred turns to the rising Nazi movement, seduced by promises and power. When Lissy’s communist brother is killed by the SA, she is forced to confront the truth about the regime, as well as her place beside the man she loves.
