On 16 December 2024, German chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a vote of confidence in the Bundestag, the German parliament. Since then, parliament has been dissolved and new federal elections have been organised, initially planned for September 2025. The voting system will be majority and proportional and will almost systematically lead to the formation of a coalition, which is necessary to elect the future chancellor.
