NASA images reveal that Africa is a global wildfire hotspot. Madagascar, home to 5% of the world's species, is no exception to the rule: in 60 years, the island has lost almost half of its forest. The fires will get more frequent as woodland dries out due to global warming. But they're also often set intentionally, to create farmland.
