It was during the Communist era that Polish fantasy emerged, reflecting a desire to escape to a better world and to criticise political power by circumventing censorship. Inspired by the legends and myths of Slavic culture, these characters are now the inspiration for many novels and series including The Witcher fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski which has been adapted into a successful series.
