Stationed in a remote Bulgarian village in 1943, German sergeant Walter lives seemingly untouched by the war until a convoy of Greek Jews on its way to Auschwitz arrives. That is how he meets Ruth, a young Jewish woman whose courage awakens his conscience. As love grows between prisoner and guard, Walter faces a devastating choice between duty and humanity in the shadow of fascism.
