To mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, Igor Levit performed the composer's 32 piano sonatas at the Salzburg Festival in 2020. Sonata No. 31 in A flat major, Op. 110 was written in 1821 and comprises of three movements rich in thematic emotion. George Bernard Shaw said it was the most beautiful of Beethoven's sonatas.

Beethoven's Sonata No. 23 in F minor, better known as the "Appassionata", is one of the composer's major works for piano. Written in 1804, it's a piece that demonstrates the throes of passion and the dramatic intensity of Beethoven's genius well. In 2020, pianist Igor Levit performed the complete 32 sonatas over eight concerts at the Salzburg Festival.

To mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, Igor Levit performed the composer's 32 piano sonatas at the Salzburg Festival in 2020. Sonata No. 18" in E flat major, Op. 31 No. 3 was composed in 1802 and is otherwise known as "the Hunt". It comprises of four fast-paced movements. The playful and virtuosic finale is considered a masterpiece showing off Beethoven's more mischievous side.

Beethoven's Sonata No. 22 in F major, Op. 54 was written in 1804 and is one of the shortest piano sonatas by the composer. It comprises of just two movements, but its rich sonorities make it highly expressive. Pianist Igor Levit performed the complete 32 sonatas in eight concerts at the Salzburg Festival in 2020.

Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2 is seen as Ludwig van Beethoven's most famous work. Composed in 1801, it was also labelled the Moonlight Sonata in 1837, ten years after the death of the composer. In 2020, pianist Igor Levit performed the complete 32 piano sonatas over eight concerts at the Salzburg Festival.

To mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, Igor Levit performed the composer's 32 piano sonatas at the Salzburg Festival 2020. Sonata No. 7 in D major, Op. 10 No. 3 was composed between 1797 and 1798. According to Igor Levit, its second movement Largo e mesto expresses a suffering that would manifest as even more intense in the later Sonata No. 29, known as the "Hammerklavier".

Maurizio Pollini, one of the great pianists of our time, died on 23 March 2024 at the age of 82. As a tribute, ARTE is showing one of his landmark concerts, given in 2004 at the Lucerne Festival. The Italian virtuoso performed Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, conducted by friend Claudio Abbado.
