Born in 1906 in St Petersburg, Dmitri Shostakovich divided his career between patriotism and a spirit of dissidence. Sometimes admired, sometimes condemned, he reluctantly became the Soviet regime's official composer. His work, which includes fifteen symphonies, reflects the inner turmoil he experienced throughout his life.
