C\u2019est bien plus tard que j\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 Eric Khoo, en 2005 en escale \u00e0 Singapour, o\u00f9 j\u2019avais d\u00e9couvert son film <em>Be With Me, <\/em>qui m\u2019avait tellement plu que je l\u2019avais imm\u00e9diatement invit\u00e9 en ouverture de la Quinzaine des r\u00e9alisateurs. Distribu\u00e9 par MK2, soutenu par Pierre Rissient qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier \u00e0 s\u2019int\u00e9resser au travail d\u2019Eric, le film avait \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019un des \u00e9v\u00e9nements du Festival de Cannes cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0 et lanc\u00e9 la carri\u00e8re internationale d\u2019Eric et sa reconnaissance critique. Le film avait aussi scell\u00e9 une grande amiti\u00e9 entre nous. Nous \u00e9voquons des souvenirs de notre premi\u00e8re rencontre et de <em>Be With Me<\/em> chaque fois que nous nous retrouvons.<br \/>\n<em>Be With Me<\/em> est un film choral sur des \u00eatres en qu\u00eate d\u2019amour. Le cin\u00e9aste parvient \u00e0 parler de solitude urbaine et de spleen sentimental sans sombrer dans la noirceur cynique et la cruaut\u00e9 des nombreuses \u00e9tudes psychologiques sur le m\u00eame sujet, est au contraire un chant d\u2019espoir, une \u0153uvre qui redonne \u00e0 la notion d\u2019humanisme sa v\u00e9ritable signification. Un chant, car c\u2019est la musicalit\u00e9 de <em>Be With Me<\/em> qui s\u00e9duit en premier lieu, la fa\u00e7on dont le cin\u00e9aste, avec un recours parcimonieux aux dialogues, compose une symphonie d\u2019\u00e9motions contradictoires. La structure du film, qui m\u00eale de mani\u00e8re extr\u00eamement subtile fiction et documentaire, des personnages invent\u00e9s et une personne r\u00e9elle, sans que ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 soit imm\u00e9diatement d\u00e9voil\u00e9 au spectateur, conf\u00e8re \u00e0 <em>Be With Me<\/em> une dimension rare et pr\u00e9cieuse, celle d\u2019essai cin\u00e9matographique. En s\u2019inspirant des m\u00e9moires, de la biographie et de la vie quotidienne d\u2019une femme remarquable, Theresa Chan (qu\u2019Eric Khoo conna\u00eet depuis des ann\u00e9es), le cin\u00e9aste met en sc\u00e8ne un film qui d\u00e9passe le simple t\u00e9moignage pour d\u00e9boucher sur une r\u00e9flexion sur l\u2019amour, l\u2019espoir et le destin.<br \/>\nPlusieurs choses nous \u00e9meuvent profond\u00e9ment dans <em>Be With Me<\/em> d\u2019Eric Khoo. D\u2019abord qu\u2019un film produit dans un pays dont on ne re\u00e7oit gu\u00e8re de nouvelles cin\u00e9matographiques, Singapour, parvienne \u00e0 nous toucher par son caract\u00e8re universel.<br \/>\nCette universalit\u00e9 s\u2019explique bien s\u00fbr par le sujet du film mais aussi la beaut\u00e9 imm\u00e9diate de son \u00e9criture cin\u00e9matographique, qui n\u00e9glige les effets superflus pour se concentrer sur des pr\u00e9occupations formelles et narratives essentielles\u00a0: comment filmer les souvenirs\u00a0? Comment filmer les sensations\u00a0? Comment filmer les sentiments\u00a0?<br \/>\nEnfin, parce que <em>Be With Me<\/em> confirme que les plus beaux films minimalistes atteignent des perspectives immenses, qui sont celles du c\u0153ur et de l\u2019esprit. En 2006, Eric Khoo r\u00e9alise un film de 39 minutes pour un long m\u00e9trage collectif, <em>No Day Off<\/em>, faux journal film\u00e9 d\u2019une femme de m\u00e9nage qui d\u00e9nonce une condition proche de l\u2019esclavage. Le film est un chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au Festival del film Locarno.<br \/>\nDeux ans plus tard, <em>My Magic<\/em> adopte la forme beaucoup plus primitive mais tout aussi po\u00e9tique du m\u00e9lodrame populaire pour raconter la d\u00e9ch\u00e9ance d\u2019un fakir alcoolique dans le quartier indien de Singapour. s\u2019inspirant une fois de plus de la vie d\u2019un personnage r\u00e9el, Francis Bosco, magicien \u00e0 la carrure impressionnante qu\u2019Eric avait rencontr\u00e9 dans les bars de la ville.<br \/>\nChaque film d\u2019Eric Khoo invente une nouvelle forme, pour l\u2019exp\u00e9rimenter. Malgr\u00e9 seul l\u2019humain l\u2019int\u00e9resse, et il s\u2019agit \u00e0 chaque film de rendre hommage \u00e0 la vie, le courage ou le talent d\u2019une personne en particulier, connue et admir\u00e9e par le cin\u00e9aste. C\u00e9l\u00e9brer un homme pour les c\u00e9l\u00e9brer tous. Nous allons d\u00e9couvrir mardi \u00e0 Cannes son nouveau film (dans la section UCR), <em>Tatsumi <\/em>(photo en t\u00eate de texte) un film d\u2019animation (nouveau pari formel pour le cin\u00e9aste) d\u2019apr\u00e8s l\u2019\u0153uvre autobiographique du dessinateur de manga Yoshihiro Tatsumi qu\u2019Eric Khoo admire depuis longtemps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 10pt\">Eric Khoo \u00e9tait le pr\u00e9sident du jury de la comp\u00e9tition internationale du Festival del film Locarno en 2010.
