Pas s\u00fbr que son retour \u00e0 la mise en sc\u00e8ne avec <em>Bullet to the Head<\/em>, un polar violent avec Stallone annonc\u00e9 pour l\u2019ann\u00e9e prochaine, ne change la donne. Sans aucune formation cin\u00e9matographique ce jeune \u00e9tudiant californien tente d\u2019abord sa chance dans l\u2019arm\u00e9e, puis s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture et au cin\u00e9ma. C\u2019est sous le double parrainage de Sam Peckinpah (qui filme en 1972 son adaptation du <em>Lien conjugal<\/em> de Jim Thompson, <em>Guet-apens,<\/em> avec Steve McQueen) et de Charles Bronson qui interpr\u00e8te le r\u00f4le principal de son premier \u2013 et meilleur\u00a0? &#8211; film, <em>Le Bagarreur <\/em>(<em>Hard Times<\/em>, 1975) que Walter Hill fait une entr\u00e9e remarqu\u00e9e \u00e0 Hollywood. <em>Driver<\/em>, <em>Le Gang des fr\u00e8res James<\/em>, <em>Les Guerriers de la nuit<\/em>, <em>Sans retour<\/em>, <em>Les Rues de feu<\/em> sont autant de relectures du cin\u00e9ma classique am\u00e9ricain mis au go\u00fbt du jour (pessimisme et ironie) et de la mode (la bande dessin\u00e9e, l\u2019esth\u00e9tique encore balbutiante des clips et des jeux vid\u00e9o). Hill appartient \u00e0 une p\u00e9riode charni\u00e8re et particuli\u00e8rement ingrate de la production commerciale\u00a0: les \u00ab\u00a0wonder boys\u00a0\u00bb des ann\u00e9es 70 ont perdu un pouvoir artistique bri\u00e8vement arrach\u00e9 aux studios, mais il reste encore une petite marge de libert\u00e9 pour que des individualistes comme Walter Hill puissent tourner quelques films \u00e0 leur guise. Plus pour longtemps. La seconde moiti\u00e9 de la carri\u00e8re de Hill subira les cons\u00e9quences des \u00e9checs commerciaux de ses films les plus personnels (<em>Driver<\/em>, <em>Sans retour<\/em>), avec cependant des sursauts d\u2019ambition o\u00f9 l\u2019on retrouve l\u2019archa\u00efsme anarchisant de ses d\u00e9buts (<em>Les Pilleurs<\/em>, <em>Un seul deviendra invincible<\/em>). Walter Hill est conscient de s\u2019inscrire dans l\u2019histoire d\u2019un cin\u00e9ma viril am\u00e9ricain, de plus en plus obsol\u00e8te et d\u00e9suet. C\u2019est un western moderne inspir\u00e9 par <em>La Horde sauvage<\/em> de Peckinpah. Il est possible que la r\u00e9ussite du film doive autant \u00e0 Hill qu\u2019\u00e0 son sc\u00e9nariste John Milius, personnage important et talentueux du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain contemporain.<\/p>\n<p>Mais nous n\u2019avons pas vu les deux derniers films \u00ab\u00a0s\u00e9rieux\u00a0\u00bb de Walter Hill, deux biographies historiques, l\u2019une sur G\u00e9romino (\u00e9crite \u00e9galement par John Milius en 1993), l\u2019autre sur James Butler Hickok (<em>Wild Bill<\/em>, 1995) avec Jeff Bridges dans le r\u00f4le-titre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On ne parle plus beaucoup de Walter Hill aujourd\u2019hui, mais a-t-on jamais vraiment parl\u00e9 de lui\u00a0?
