R\u00e9fugi\u00e9 \u00e0 Londres, le cin\u00e9aste y met en sc\u00e8ne, d&rsquo;abord sous pseudonyme, puis sous son vrai nom, une s\u00e9rie de films remarquables dans lesquels il conserve intacte, contrairement \u00e0 d&rsquo;autres victimes du maccarthysme (Jules Dassin, John\u00a0 Berry) l&rsquo;acuit\u00e9 de son talent. <em>La b\u00eate s&rsquo;\u00e9veille, Temps sans piti\u00e9, L&rsquo;Enqu\u00eate de l&rsquo;inspecteur Morgan, Gypsy<\/em>\u2026 Ces films s&rsquo;apparentent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement au genre du thriller (\u00e0 l\u2019exception du film historique <em>Gypsy<\/em>), comme ces <em>Criminels<\/em> qui apporte au film de prison et \u00e0 ses codes bien d\u00e9finis un surcro\u00eet de r\u00e9alisme, avec une attention presque documentaire port\u00e9e aux d\u00e9cors de cellules. Entre deux s\u00e9jours en prison un gangster r\u00e9ussit un hold-up fructueux. Le sc\u00e9nario est cosign\u00e9 par Jimmy Sangster, pillier de la Hammer films (pour laquelle Losey r\u00e9alisera l\u2019\u00e9trange fable de science-fiction <em>Les Damn\u00e9s <\/em>trois ans plus tard.) Le personnage principal est interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Stanley Baker, acteur viril qui incarne \u00e0 la perfection les antih\u00e9ros violents et n\u00e9vros\u00e9s du Losey \u00ab\u00a0premi\u00e8re p\u00e9riode\u00a0\u00bb (les deux hommes tourneront quatre films ensemble.) Dans ce polar brutal, le cin\u00e9aste ne renonce en rien \u00e0 sa conception marxiste de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et l&rsquo;univers carc\u00e9ral, rong\u00e9 par la corruption et \u00e9videmment in\u00e9galitaire se transforme en m\u00e9taphore de notre syst\u00e8me social et \u00e9conomique. H\u00e9las <em>Les Criminels<\/em> est l\u2019un des derniers films de Losey \u00e0 r\u00e9unir toutes les qualit\u00e9s de son cin\u00e9ma qui va bient\u00f4t sombrer dans l&rsquo;intellectualisme au gr\u00e9 d&rsquo;entreprises culturelles de plus en plus d\u00e9cevantes. De la fin de carri\u00e8re de Losey seul <em>Mr. Klein<\/em> (1976) r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en France avec Alain Delon dans le r\u00f4le-titre s&rsquo;av\u00e8re totalement convaincant et m\u00eame g\u00e9nial. <em>Le Messager <\/em>(<em>The Go-Between<\/em>, 1971) est tr\u00e8s beau aussi. <em>Les Criminels<\/em> ne pr\u00e9tend pas au statut de chef-d&rsquo;\u0153uvre mais il est parfaitement repr\u00e9sentatif de l&rsquo;art d&rsquo;un cin\u00e9aste en pleine possession de ses moyens.
