The Man from Planet X<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00ab Un film minuscule qui ouvre des perspectives incalculables. \u00bb Ainsi Jacques Lourcelles, dans son Dictionnaire du cin\u00e9ma<\/em>, r\u00e9sume-t-il The Man from Planet X<\/em>. Une phrase qui s\u2019applique d\u2019ailleurs \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre enti\u00e8re de Edgar G. Ulmer. Autrichien (mais il est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Olomouc, aujourd\u2019hui en R\u00e9publique tch\u00e8que, en 1904), Ulmer travaille aupr\u00e8s de Murnau (assistant d\u00e9corateur sur L\u2019Aurore<\/em>), Lang, Wegener, Lubitsch\u2026 En 1929 il cor\u00e9alise avec Robert Siodmak le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Les Homme, le dimanche<\/em> avant de s\u2019expatrier en 1930 \u00e0 Hollywood pour mener une carri\u00e8re des plus erratiques. Personnalit\u00e9 excentrique – ses interviews t\u00e9moignent de son go\u00fbt de l\u2019affabulation proche de la mythomanie – Ulmer dut s\u2019accommoder la plupart du temps de budgets rachitiques et d\u2019acteurs de troisi\u00e8me zone, travaillant pour les plus petits studios d\u2019Hollywood, tournant indistinctement films fantastiques (Le Chat noir<\/em> avec Karloff et Lugosi), westerns (Le Bandit<\/em>, son chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre), films noirs (Detour<\/em>), mais aussi films destin\u00e9s aux minorit\u00e9s juives, noirs et ukrainiennes, fantaisies orientales, m\u00e9lodrames, com\u00e9dies mondaines, films de pirates, p\u00e9plums, fantastiques, mais toujours avec une passion ind\u00e9fectible pour l\u2019expressionnisme, un g\u00e9nie de l\u2019espace et de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, des motifs visuels (l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment aquatique) et th\u00e9matiques r\u00e9currents (le Destin) perp\u00e9tuant \u00e9galement une tradition romantique allemande, dans la lign\u00e9e de Murnau. Ulmer r\u00e9alisa trois films de science-fiction : The Amazing Transparent Man<\/em> et Beyond the Time Barrier<\/em>, tourn\u00e9s en 1960 en onze jours dans les m\u00eames d\u00e9cors mobiles et surtout The Man from Planet X<\/em> (1951), tourn\u00e9 en six jours dans les d\u00e9cors de la Jeanne d\u2019Arc<\/em> de Victor Fleming. Comme souvent, Ulmer parvient \u00e0 transcender l\u2019absence cruelle de budget, instaurant un climat de m\u00e9lancolie et de po\u00e9sie qui tranche avec les habituelles s\u00e9ries de science-fiction belliqueuses, et inaugure un dimension humaniste du genre. Il faut red\u00e9couvrir Ulmer, sans conteste le plus grand r\u00e9alisateur de petits films am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n

Ce sera possible gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que fran\u00e7aise qui organise du 4 juillet au 5 ao\u00fbt la tant attendue r\u00e9trospective (la plus compl\u00e8te possible) des films de ce g\u00e9nial cin\u00e9aste, \u00e0 la fois underground et hollywoodien. Un \u00e9v\u00e9nement riche en surprises et d\u00e9couvertes. Ne pas manquer, parmi tant d\u2019autres perles Cinq contre la mort<\/em> (The Cavern<\/em>) le dernier et tr\u00e8s beau film d\u2019Ulmer tourn\u00e9 en Italie en 1964.<\/p>\n
