Le romancier Richard Matheson (\u00ab\u00a0Journal d\u2019un monstre\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Homme qui r\u00e9tr\u00e9cit\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Le Jeune Homme, la mort et le temps\u00a0\u00bb) est un des fondateurs de\u00a0 la science-fiction am\u00e9ricaine moderne. Matheson devint par la suite un sc\u00e9nariste tr\u00e8s productif de la firme AIP, en adaptant notamment les nouvelles de Poe pour Corman. En Grande-Bretagne, il collabore au sc\u00e9nario de deux tr\u00e8s bons films de sorcellerie : <em>Night of the Eagle<\/em> de Sidney Hayers et <em>Les Vierges de Satan<\/em> de Terence Fisher. Il \u00e9crivit \u00e9galement des romans policiers et des \u00e9pisodes de \u00ab\u00a0The Twilight Zone\u00a0\u00bb, avant de participer \u00e0 la r\u00e9ussite de <em>Duel <\/em>du d\u00e9butant Spielberg. \u00ab\u00a0Je suis une l\u00e9gende\u00a0\u00bb est une modernisation du mythe du vampire. Le vampirisme n\u2019y est plus appr\u00e9hend\u00e9 comme une mal\u00e9diction mais comme une maladie contagieuse (un virus a transform\u00e9 la population mondiale en monstres photo phobiques assoiff\u00e9s de sang), anticipant l\u2019horreur g\u00e9n\u00e9tique des premiers films de Cronenberg. Matheson se d\u00e9clara insatisfait de <em>The Last Man on Earth<\/em> (1964), la premi\u00e8re adaptation de son roman, coproduction italo-am\u00e9ricaine r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par Sidney Salkow et Ubaldo Ragona selon le principe des doubles versions. Pourtant, tourn\u00e9 avec un budget minimaliste dans la banlieue d\u00e9sertique de Rome et port\u00e9 par l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation g\u00e9niale de Vincent Price, cette bande post apocalyptique distille un climat d\u2019angoisse dont Romero se souviendra lorsqu\u2019il r\u00e9alisera <em>La Nuit des morts-vivants<\/em>, sur un postulat d\u2019ailleurs assez proche. <em>Le Survivant<\/em> (<em>The Omega Man<\/em>, 1971) de Boris Sagal (un transfuge de la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision), palpitant thriller de science-fiction, ent\u00e9rine le statut de surhomme futuriste de Charlton Heston, apr\u00e8s <em>La Plan\u00e8te des singes<\/em> et <em>Soleil Vert<\/em>.
