Robert Rossen termina pr\u00e9matur\u00e9ment sa carri\u00e8re avec un chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre, <em>Lilith<\/em>, doubl\u00e9 d\u2019un film maudit. La filmographie de Robert Rossen, sc\u00e9nariste devenu cin\u00e9aste qui signa plusieurs classiques (<em>Sang et Or<\/em>, <em>Les Fous du roi<\/em>, <em>L\u2019Arnaqueur<\/em>) et future victime (mais aussi un d\u00e9nonciateur) de la chasse aux sorci\u00e8res, ne laissait pas pr\u00e9sager un titre ultime comme <em>Lilith. <\/em>Rossen, gravement malade devait mourir deux ans apr\u00e8s la sortie du film, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de cinquante-sept ans. <em>Lilith<\/em> raconte l\u2019histoire d\u2019un jeune homme mal dans sa peau (il revient de la guerre et vit dans le souvenir de sa m\u00e8re morte alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait encore enfant) qui se fait embaucher comme aide soignait dans une clinique psychiatrique. Il ne tarde pas \u00e0 tomber amoureux d\u2019une patiente, Lilith, une jeune schizophr\u00e8ne, et d\u00e9couvre que cette derni\u00e8re entretient des relations sexuelles indiff\u00e9renci\u00e9es avec d\u2019autres malades de la clinique et aime s\u00e9duire les petits gar\u00e7ons. La fr\u00e9quentation de l\u2019univers de la folie finit de d\u00e9stabiliser Vincent, dont la m\u00e8re \u00e9tait folle, et l\u2019impossible histoire d\u2019amour entre les jeunes gens aura une issue tragique. Chronique provinciale, drame psychologique, peinture d\u2019une institution psychiatrique (la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e qu\u2019<em>Un enfant attend <\/em>de John Cassavetes, production Stanley Kramer et autre film d\u2019\u00e9corch\u00e9 vif), <em>Lilith <\/em>est surtout un essai de cin\u00e9ma po\u00e9tique qui d\u00e9tonne dans la production hollywoodienne. Si \u00e0 la m\u00eame \u00e9poque le cin\u00e9ma moderne explose en Europe (Bergman, Pasolini, Godard), le film de Rossen, qui ne leur doit pourtant rien, s\u2019\u00e9loigne des canons esth\u00e9tiques du cin\u00e9ma \u00e0 th\u00e8se am\u00e9ricain. Car malgr\u00e9 son sujet, son approche de th\u00e8mes sexuels scabreux, le film d\u00e9laisse les sentiers battus pour s\u2019engager sur les chemins rarement explor\u00e9s au cin\u00e9ma de la description de l\u2019\u00e2me des personnages. Ce n\u2019est jamais lourdement psychologique et encore moins th\u00e9orique, mais au contraire sensuel, incarn\u00e9 : m\u00e9lange de r\u00e9alisme et d\u2019onirisme, sublimation de la nature, surimpression et fondus encha\u00een\u00e9s conf\u00e8re au film un climat envo\u00fbtant et trouble, associ\u00e9 \u00e0 une description d\u2019une subtilit\u00e9 incroyable des caract\u00e8res, \u00e0 mille lieux des clich\u00e9 hollywoodiens sur la maladie mentale. Et il y a le couple magnifique form\u00e9 par Warren Beatty et Jean Seberg. La carri\u00e8re de l\u2019une est d\u00e9j\u00e0 presque termin\u00e9e (du moins aux Etats-Unis\u00a0: on peut consid\u00e9rer <em>Les Hautes solitudes<\/em> comme la suite tragiquement logique, autobiographique et europ\u00e9enne de <em>Lilith<\/em>) tandis que celle de l\u2019autre ne fait que commencer, avec d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but des choix courageux et intelligents\u00a0: <em>L\u2019Ange de la violence<\/em> de John Frankenheimer et <em>Mickey One<\/em> d\u2019Arthur Penn encadrent <em>Lilith<\/em> dans la filmographie de Warren Beatty. Ce sang neuf d\u2019acteurs encore presque vierges (il ne faut pas oublier la pr\u00e9sence extraordinaire des d\u00e9butants Peter Fonda et Gene Hackman) souligne la modernit\u00e9 de <em>Lilith<\/em>.
