On a de la mati\u00e8re avec Robert Altman, surtout dans les ann\u00e9es 80 et 90. Davantage encore que <em>O.C. and Stiggs<\/em>, <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune <\/em>ou <em>Docteur T et les femmes<\/em>, <em>The Gingerbread Man<\/em> (1998) ne compte pas parmi les titres essentiels ou repr\u00e9sentatifs de la carri\u00e8re du cin\u00e9aste am\u00e9ricain. On se demande encore ce qui a pu d\u00e9cider Robert Altman \u00e0 filmer cette histoire originale de John Grisham, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre auteur de best-sellers judiciaires. Et ce n\u2019est pas le r\u00e9sultat final qui va \u00e9clairer le spectateur sur les intentions d\u2019Altman, qui d\u00e9clara \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque qu\u2019il avait trouv\u00e9 l\u00e0 l\u2019occasion de r\u00e9aliser un thriller, genre qu\u2019il n\u2019avait jamais abord\u00e9. A sa sortie, <em>The Gingerbread Man<\/em> fit surtout parler de lui \u00e0 cause de la bagarre qui opposa le r\u00e9alisateur et ses producteurs au sujet du montage final du film. Apr\u00e8s des projections test d\u00e9cevantes, Polygram d\u00e9cida en effet de remonter le film, d\u00e9clenchant l\u2019ire d\u2019Altman qui demanda \u00e0 ce que son nom soir retir\u00e9 du g\u00e9n\u00e9rique. Comme le montage de Polygram se r\u00e9v\u00e9la encore plus catastrophique aupr\u00e8s du public lors de la sortie du film, c\u2019est finalement le montage initial du r\u00e9alisateur qui fut distribu\u00e9, permettant au long m\u00e9trage d\u2019Altman d\u2019\u00eatre un succ\u00e8s critique \u00e0 d\u00e9faut d\u2019un triomphe commercial. Ce conflit \u00e0 l\u2019issue heureuse et m\u00eame \u00e9difiante est symptomatique des relations houleuses que Robert Altman entretint toute sa vie avec le syst\u00e8me hollywoodien et les studios ind\u00e9pendants. Et c\u2019est finalement John Grisham qui disparut du g\u00e9n\u00e9rique en tant que sc\u00e9nariste, utilisant le pseudonyme d\u2019Al Hayes en raison de ses d\u00e9saccords avec Altman. Le sc\u00e9nario de <em>The Gingerbread Man<\/em>, justement, n\u2019est pas renversant. Un avocat divorc\u00e9 voit sa brillante carri\u00e8re s\u2019\u00e9crouler \u00e0 cause de sa nouvelle cliente et ma\u00eetresse, une jeune femme martyris\u00e9e par son p\u00e8re, le chef d\u2019une secte de clochards. Reste le film en tant qu\u2019objet cin\u00e9matographique. Et l\u00e0 le r\u00e9sultat devient sinon plus int\u00e9ressant du moins s\u00e9duisant. Car le talent de filmeur d\u2019Altman est perceptible \u00e0 chaque plan. On retrouve cette fa\u00e7on d\u2019aller et venir sur des personnages \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur d\u2019un groupe, d\u2019englober un intrigue principale dans un mouvement plus large &#8211; ici l\u2019attente d\u2019un cyclone qui s\u2019approche de la ville, sym\u00e9triquement \u00e0 la progression, de plus en plus pr\u00e9visible du suspense. Le cin\u00e9aste privil\u00e9gie les sc\u00e8nes et des personnages secondaires (interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par les excellents Robert Downey Jr., Tom Berenger, Robert Duvall, entourant un Kenneth Branagh moins mauvais que d\u2019habitude) par rapport \u00e0 l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 du r\u00e9cit. Altman semble se moquer pas mal du sc\u00e9nario de Grisham en exp\u00e9diant en quelques minutes une sc\u00e8ne de proc\u00e8s aussi b\u00e2cl\u00e9e que le proc\u00e8s lui-m\u00eame. C\u2019est la force d\u2019Altman d\u2019insuffler son style inimitable \u00e0 un r\u00e9cit conventionnel. Il manque sans doute \u00e0 <em>The Gingerbread Man<\/em> la touche d\u2019intelligence et de d\u00e9rision habituelle d\u2019Altman lorsqu\u2019il entreprenait dans les ann\u00e9es 70 de dynamiter les conventions du cin\u00e9ma hollywoodien classique, que se soit le film noir avec <em>Le Priv\u00e9<\/em> ou la science-fiction avec <em>Quintet<\/em>. Le cin\u00e9ma de genre r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 Altman \u00e0 condition qu\u2019il soit libre de le subvertir de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur. Si l\u2019on \u00e9tait pervers, on avancerait l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se qu\u2019Altman a eut envie de filmer une histoire de Grisham car il a \u00e9t\u00e9 attir\u00e9 par la misanthropie de l\u2019\u00e9crivain. <em>The Gingerbread Man <\/em>est en effet un film vachard, misogyne et mal pensant. On aime bien les sc\u00e8nes hargneuses o\u00f9 Kenneth Branagh casse la figure au concierge de l\u2019\u00e9cole de ses enfants, ou ses disputes avec sa gar\u00e7e d\u2019ex-femme et son nouveau mec. Une telle m\u00e9chancet\u00e9 fait parfois mouche, et constitue peut-\u00eatre la l\u00e9gitimation &#8211; assez faible &#8211; du film. Au moment de sa sortie <em>The Gingerbread Man<\/em> souffrit de la comparaison avec le beau <em>Minuit dans le jardin du Bien et du mal<\/em> de Clint Eastwood (les deux films se d\u00e9roulent \u00e0 Savannah, pittoresque ville de G\u00e9orgie), et surtout avec <em>L\u2019Id\u00e9aliste<\/em> de Francis Ford Coppola, une autre commande d\u2019apr\u00e8s un bouquin de John Grisham, beaucoup plus magistrale et passionnante que le film d\u2019Altman, qui apparut comme un coup dans l\u2019eau de plus dans la carri\u00e8re in\u00e9gale d\u2019un auteur majeur du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain.<\/p>\n<p>Le film sera projet\u00e9 le samedi 4 f\u00e9vrier \u00e0 22h et le dimanche 26 f\u00e9vrier \u00e0 19h30 dans le cadre de l\u2019hommage \u00e0 Robert Altman \u00e0 la Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que fran\u00e7aise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eloge du film mineur, suite.
