Cela s\u2019appelle <em>7 Women<\/em> en version originale, <em>Fronti\u00e8re chinoise<\/em> en version fran\u00e7aise. Ford, comme Dreyer ou Mizoguchi, termine sa carri\u00e8re par un sublime portrait de femme. On peut d&rsquo;abord \u00eatre d\u00e9rout\u00e9 par le sujet : en 1935, six femmes dans une mission catholique au fin fond de la Chine attendent comme le Messie le m\u00e9decin qui pourra accoucher l&rsquo;une d&rsquo;elles, proche de la m\u00e9nopause. Le docteur se r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00eatre une femme, aventuri\u00e8re qui a fui les \u00c9tats-Unis et qui trouve dans cette mission un ramassis de femelles trop jeunes ou trop vieilles, hyst\u00e9riques et bigotes. Le seul homme est un aspirant pasteur faible et ridicule (le toujours bien Eddie Albert). La doctoresse Cartwright (la splendide Anne Bancroft) est une femme libre qui choque la petite communaut\u00e9 par son comportement et son ath\u00e9isme. Elle sauvera cependant le groupe \u00e0 deux reprises gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses comp\u00e9tences et son courage, une premi\u00e8re fois lors d&rsquo;une \u00e9pid\u00e9mie du chol\u00e9ra puis \u00e0 l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e d&rsquo;une horde de barbares semant la mort et la destruction sur leur passage. Le film est sombre, tendu, f\u00e9minin, alors que Ford nous a habitu\u00e9 \u00e0 une \u0153uvre solaire, d\u00e9contract\u00e9e, virile. Mais \u00e0 l&rsquo;instar de <em>L&rsquo;homme qui tua Liberty Valance<\/em>, <em>Fronti\u00e8re chinoise<\/em> pose des questions essentielles sur la civilisation et la barbarie, l&rsquo;individu et le groupe, Dieu et la foi. Hors du monde (nous ne quittons jamais l&rsquo;enceinte de la mission) se joue une \u00e9pure stylis\u00e9e du th\u00e9\u00e2tre fordien. Que des femmes assurent la derni\u00e8re repr\u00e9sentation ne change rien aux choses, si ce n&rsquo;est que cette ultime surprise souligne l&rsquo;anticonformisme, la haine de l&rsquo;hypocrisie religieuse, le rejet de toutes les formes de puritanismes et de violences du plus grand cin\u00e9aste am\u00e9ricain.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cela aurait pu s\u2019appeler Femmes entre elles, mais Antonioni avait piqu\u00e9 le titre dix ans auparavant.
