Il y a de quoi faire avec Altman. On a le droit d\u2019admirer <em>M*A*S*H*, Le Priv\u00e9, Nashville, The Player <\/em>ou <em>Short Cuts, <\/em>mais des films moins connus comme <em>California Split, Quintet, Un couple parfait, Docteur T et les femmes <\/em>sont hautement recommandables. La r\u00e9trospective \u00e0 la Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que fran\u00e7aise devrait permettre de les revoir ou de les d\u00e9couvrir, et en particulier de se pencher sur la fin de carri\u00e8re d\u2019Altman, (l\u2019apr\u00e8s <em>Short Cuts<\/em>), largement sous-estim\u00e9e. Elle rec\u00e8le de nombreuses p\u00e9pites, \u00e0 d\u00e9faut de chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre (sauf peut-\u00eatre son magnifique et testamentaire <em>The Last Show<\/em>).<br \/>\nLorsqu\u2019il tourne <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune <\/em>en 1999, Robert Altman n\u2019a plus grand-chose \u00e0 prouver. Il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 sign\u00e9 plus de 80 films pour le cin\u00e9ma et la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision depuis les ann\u00e9es 50\u00a0; il a r\u00e9ussi, avec <em>The Player<\/em> et <em>Short Cuts<\/em>, un des plus spectaculaires come-backs du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain.<br \/>\nIl acc\u00e8de avec <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune<\/em> \u00e0 une forme de s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9 qui le rend encore plus libre et plus s\u00fbr de lui par rapport au sc\u00e9nario et au tournage et lui permet de se soucier davantage de l\u2019ensemble que du d\u00e9tail, de privil\u00e9gier la chor\u00e9graphie du film plut\u00f4t que son sujet propre.<br \/>\nIl est d\u00e9j\u00e0 facile de distinguer une influence renoirienne (un des cin\u00e9astes pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s d\u2019Altman) dans <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune<\/em>, \u00e9videmment m\u00eal\u00e9e aux propres pr\u00e9occupations, th\u00e8mes et m\u00e9thodes de travail du cin\u00e9aste am\u00e9ricain. Il y a dans <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune<\/em> une mosa\u00efque de personnages qui forment une petite communaut\u00e9 humaine, avec ses histoires d\u2019amiti\u00e9, d\u2019amour, de jalousie, des m\u00e9langes de caract\u00e8res et de personnalit\u00e9s qui vont de la b\u00eatise \u00e0 l\u2019intelligence, de la m\u00e9chancet\u00e9 \u00e0 la bont\u00e9, de l\u2019innocence \u00e0 la culpabilit\u00e9. La diff\u00e9rence entre <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune<\/em> et les autres films choraux d\u2019Altman r\u00e9side dans l\u2019existence d\u2019une intrigue polici\u00e8re certes minimaliste, mais qui structure davantage le long m\u00e9trage qui ne se limite pas \u00e0 une \u00e9tude de caract\u00e8re ou de comportement. On a souvent reproch\u00e9 \u00e0 Altman d\u2019adopter une vision surplombante du r\u00e9cit, en jugeant de hauts des personnages englu\u00e9s dans leur m\u00e9diocrit\u00e9 ou leur pr\u00e9tention. Ici la misanthropie l\u00e9gendaire (et contestable, si l\u2019on revoit ses films) d\u2019Atman s\u2019estompe au profit d\u2019une v\u00e9ritable bienveillance. Altman est n\u00e9 dans le Missouri et il a une profonde affection pour cette petite communaut\u00e9 sudiste, m\u00eame s\u2019il brocarde au passage les aspects ridicules de la petite bourgeoisie, bigote, hypocrite et rigide des bourgades endormies du Sud des Etats-Unis, o\u00f9 le temps semble s\u2019\u00eatre arr\u00eat\u00e9. Qu\u2019ils soient flics, blancs, noirs, jeunes ou vieux, malins ou demeur\u00e9s, presque tous les personnages de <em>Cookie\u2019s Fortune<\/em> sont sympathiques \u00e0 l\u2019exception de Camille, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re grandiose par Glenn Close et qui cumule tous les d\u00e9fauts et les tares de la vieille fille de province.
