Il s&rsquo;associe \u00e0 une prostitu\u00e9e ambitieuse, Mrs Miller. Leur commerce prend de l\u2019ampleur, au point d\u2019attirer l\u2019attention des capitalistes de la r\u00e9gion qui veulent lui racheter. Devant son refus, ils envoient dans le village trois tueurs pour \u00e9radiquer cette poche de r\u00e9sistance au monopole des gros patrons. <em>John McCabe<\/em> appartient \u00e0 son \u00e9poque, les ann\u00e9es 70, propices aux remises en question. Altman attaque l&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique par ses fondations et ses mythes : celui du spectacle (<em>Nashville<\/em>, <em>Buffalo Bill et les Indiens<\/em>) du progr\u00e8s (<em>Le Priv\u00e9<\/em>), celui de la famille et du melting-pot (<em>Un Mariage<\/em>) et dans John McCabe, celui de la libre entreprise. Nous ne sommes pas \u00e9loign\u00e9s, au rayon des th\u00e8mes, de certains films de John Huston, des westerns \u00e9l\u00e9giaques de Sam Peckinpah et de <em>La Porte du paradis<\/em> de Michael Cimino (1980), cl\u00f4ture de cette veine autocritique et r\u00e9visionniste qui tend \u00e0 faire un sort au mythe de la fronti\u00e8re et \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer que civilisation et violence ont souvent fait bon m\u00e9nage.<br \/>\nL\u2019originalit\u00e9 du film est ailleurs\u00a0: dans la m\u00e9thode d\u2019Altman, filmeur acharn\u00e9 qui encha\u00eene les tournages et aime \u00e0 s\u2019entourer d\u2019une \u00e9quipe technique et artistique r\u00e9guli\u00e8re, que viennent ici rejoindre deux stars (le couple form\u00e9 alors \u00e0 la ville comme \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran par Warren Beatty et Julie Christie) qui sont aussi deux grands acteurs capables de malmener leur image proprette (m\u00eame si les relations entre Beatty et Altman seront ex\u00e9crables.) Altman et sa troupe ont boulevers\u00e9 les habitudes du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain. Le cin\u00e9aste ne respecte qu\u2019en apparence les r\u00e8gles du western\u00a0: un \u00e9tranger arrive dans une ville, il lutte seul contre une organisation, jusqu\u2019au r\u00e8glement de comptes final. Le h\u00e9ros du film est un ancien tueur et un maquereau sans envergure, le village prosp\u00e8re autour du bordel et non de l\u2019\u00e9glise, le r\u00e9cit se d\u00e9roule imperturbablement comme un incident sans importance dans l\u2019histoire de l\u2019avanc\u00e9e du progr\u00e8s. John McCabe, vestige du pass\u00e9, mort en sursis, ne laissera aucune trace dans les m\u00e9moires. Pas m\u00eame dans celle de sa ma\u00eetresse, Mrs Miller, arriviste bris\u00e9e qui se r\u00e9fugie dans les volutes de l\u2019opium. La mort, la drogue, l\u2019oubli. <em>John McCabe<\/em>\u00a0 est un film mortuaire, nimb\u00e9 du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin dans un linceul de neige et de boue, berc\u00e9 par les sublimes chansons de Leonard Cohen dont on ne sait si elles commentent les images ou l\u2019inverse. <em>John McCabe<\/em> ne se contente pourtant pas de suivre la th\u00e9matique de l\u2019\u00e9chec en vogue ces ann\u00e9es-l\u00e0. Altman est un cin\u00e9aste en rupture avec le cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain et sa fa\u00e7on de raconter des histoires. Sa fa\u00e7on de filmer, en longs plans mobiles qui captent plusieurs actions simultan\u00e9es, qui accueillent l\u2019improvisation et g\u00e8rent les impr\u00e9vus, frappe encore aujourd\u2019hui par sa modernit\u00e9. L\u2019utilisation de la musique, ainsi que la photographie du grand Vilmos Zsigmond, une fois de plus tr\u00e8s audacieuse, sont r\u00e9volutionnaires.<br \/>\nC\u2019est enfin un film o\u00f9 Altman, pas encore prisonnier de sa trop fameuse (et contestable) misanthropie, osait encore nous \u00e9mouvoir avec deux personnages de losers presque magnifiques et leur histoire d\u2019amour, fut-elle mal partag\u00e9e, monnay\u00e9e et sans avenir. Les sc\u00e8nes o\u00f9 McCabe souffre sans oser le dire de voir Mrs Miller monter avec des clients, et qu\u2019il se lamente d\u2019\u00eatre un rustre sans instruction incapable de d\u00e9voiler ses sentiments \u00e0 la femme qu\u2019il aime compte parmi les plus belles du film et de tout le cin\u00e9ma d\u2019Altman.
