C\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 un \u00e9v\u00e9nement en soi puisqu\u2019il aura fallu attendre octobre 2011 pour voir un film de Denis C\u00f4t\u00e9 dans les salles fran\u00e7aises, alors que le cin\u00e9aste qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois en ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e0 son sixi\u00e8me long m\u00e9trage et que d\u00e8s les premiers, <em>Les Etats nordiques<\/em>, il avait retenu l\u2019attention des festivals du monde entier et de la communaut\u00e9 cin\u00e9matographique internationale. Doit-on imputer cette anomalie \u2013 dans un pays r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour sa curiosit\u00e9 cin\u00e9philique et son soutien au cin\u00e9ma d\u2019auteur contemporain \u2013 au manque d\u2019exotisme du Qu\u00e9bec, moins excitant aux yeux de la critique occidentale que la Tha\u00eflande, l\u2019Argentine ou la Cor\u00e9e du Sud\u00a0? <em>Curling<\/em> est une excellente entr\u00e9e dans l\u2019univers cin\u00e9matographique de Denis C\u00f4t\u00e9 puisque \u00e0 la suite des <em>Etats nordiques<\/em> (2005), <em>Nos vies priv\u00e9es<\/em> (2007), <em>Elle veut le chaos<\/em> (2008) et <em>Carcasses <\/em>(tous montr\u00e9s et souvent prim\u00e9s au Festival del film Locarno, \u00e0 l\u2019exception de Carcasses que j\u2019avais pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 la Quinzaine des r\u00e9alisateurs en 2009), c\u2019est sans doute son meilleur film, le plus abouti et le plus \u00ab\u00a0accessible\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 10pt\">D\u2019abord critique, C\u00f4t\u00e9 envisage un cin\u00e9ma \u00e0 la fois formaliste et ouvert au monde, qui se caract\u00e9rise par un refus de la narration traditionnelle. Contre un certain cin\u00e9ma lin\u00e9aire, contre la dictature du sc\u00e9nario, Denis C\u00f4t\u00e9 se pla\u00eet \u00e0 entretenir dans ses fictions des zones d\u2019ombre, des images ou des actions inexpliqu\u00e9es, des failles du sens, des b\u00e9ances dans lesquelles le spectateur peut s\u2019engouffrer, l\u2019imaginaire en \u00e9veil. Le cin\u00e9ma de C\u00f4t\u00e9 est en effet un cin\u00e9ma de l\u2019imaginaire, faussement r\u00e9aliste. L\u2019observation du r\u00e9el d\u00e9bouche toujours sur des situations \u00e0 la lisi\u00e8re de l\u2019onirisme ou du fantastique, m\u00eame dans un film essai plus ouvertement documentaire comme <em>Carcasses<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 10pt\"><em>Curling<\/em> raconte l\u2019histoire d\u2019un couple \u00e9trange form\u00e9 par un p\u00e8re et sa fille, dans la campagne canadienne. Jean-Fran\u00e7ois s\u2019occupe de la maintenance d\u2019un motel et d\u2019un bowling, tandis que sa fille Julyvonne, une jeune adolescente passe ses journ\u00e9es \u00e0 la maison \u00e0 ne rien faire. En effet Jean-Fran\u00e7ois, homme fruste et solitaire, refuse de scolariser sa fille et la maintient hors du monde, soit disant pour la prot\u00e9ger. Julyvonne, lors de ses rares sorties, voit un tigre dans un champ enneig\u00e9, et des cadavres gel\u00e9s dans un sous-bois. Du naturalisme du d\u00e9but du film (renforc\u00e9e par le fait que les acteurs sont p\u00e8re et fille dans la vraie vie, Emmanuel et Philom\u00e8ne Bilodeau) on passe subtilement vers une forme de fantastique social, o\u00f9 la pr\u00e9carit\u00e9 et l\u2019isolement des personnages entra\u00eenent un d\u00e9r\u00e8glement de la perception du monde. On a le droit de consid\u00e9rer les d\u00e9couvertes macabres de Julyvonne comme de pures visions mentales, li\u00e9es \u00e0 un \u00e9tat morbide entretenu par les n\u00e9vroses de son p\u00e8re vis-\u00e0-vis des relations humaines et du monde ext\u00e9rieur. Quant \u00e0 Jean-Fran\u00e7ois il constate d\u2019impressionnantes traces sanglantes dans une chambre du motel quitt\u00e9e par un client, sans que sa d\u00e9couverte n\u2019entra\u00eene la moindre enqu\u00eate\u2026 Plus tard, il voit un corps sans vie sur le bord de la route et plut\u00f4t que de pr\u00e9venir la police d\u00e9cide de le cacher, pris de panique, comme si c\u2019\u00e9tait lui l\u2019assassin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 10pt\">Le film regorge de fausses pistes, de d\u00e9parts trompeurs, de portes qui s\u2019ouvrent sur l\u2019\u00e9trange, d\u2019\u00e9bauches de r\u00e9cits stopp\u00e9es net par un nouvel incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 10pt\">On a tr\u00e8s superficiellement rattach\u00e9 le cin\u00e9ma de C\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00e0 celui de Lynch, mais c\u2019est plut\u00f4t vers Resnais et Hitchcock qu\u2019il faudrait trouver des signes et des indices pour d\u00e9crypter un film comme <em>Curling<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial;font-size: 10pt\">Dans une critique tr\u00e8s inspir\u00e9e parue dans \u00ab\u00a0Le Monde\u00a0\u00bb, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Rauger a per\u00e7u la filiation secr\u00e8te de <em>Curling<\/em> avec un titre s\u00e9minal de l\u2019histoire du cin\u00e9ma, <em>Psychose<\/em> d\u2019Alfred Hitchcock\u00a0: un motel, une salle de bain ensanglant\u00e9e, un corps qu\u2019il faut faire dispara\u00eetre, un homme timide, des femmes aguicheuses, la peur de la police\u2026 Voil\u00e0 les ingr\u00e9dients du film d\u2019Hitchcock que Denis C\u00f4t\u00e9, en bon cin\u00e9phile et bon cin\u00e9aste, r\u00e9utilise \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, sans rien souligner de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re qu\u2019il laisse planer le doute de l\u2019inceste sur tout le film.
