Ce film est moins connu en Occident que d&rsquo;autres titres embl\u00e9matiques r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 la m\u00eame \u00e9poque par Tsui Hark, Ann Hui ou John Woo, mais il a sa place parmi les films importants de la nouvelle vague hongkongaise, exemple dynamique de m\u00e9lodrame historique, m\u00ealant humour, bagarres et grands sentiments. C&rsquo;est sans doute le meilleur film de Po-Chih Leong, cin\u00e9aste atypique de Hong Kong, n\u00e9 en Angleterre, qui partira conclure sa carri\u00e8re aux Etats-Unis, dans un relatif anonymat. <em>Hong Kong 1941<\/em>, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1984 et \u00e9crit par Sammo Hung, relate, par le petit bout de la lorgnette, l\u2019offensive japonaise qui s\u2019empare de la colonie britannique avec le projet de cr\u00e9er un empire asiatique d\u00e9barrass\u00e9 de l\u2019influence occidentale, et d\u2019asservir avec violence et cruaut\u00e9 la population locale. Petit bout de la lorgnette, parce que le film adopte le point de vue d\u2019un trio \u00e0 la Jules et Jim, issus de milieux diff\u00e9rents \u2013 elle est la fille d\u2019un grand bourgeois de la ville, ce sont deux d\u00e9class\u00e9s &#8211; et unis par l\u2019amour et l\u2019amiti\u00e9. Le film ne poss\u00e8de pas les moyens d\u2019une grande fresque, et pr\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e9tudier les bouleversements provoqu\u00e9s par une trag\u00e9die historique sur les r\u00eaves, les aspirations et les d\u00e9sirs de trois jeunes gens. On y voit aussi les comportements de la population face \u00e0 l\u2019occupant, ceux qui subissent en martyrs, ceux qui r\u00e9sistent avec courage devant les horreurs commises par l\u2019arm\u00e9e japonaise, ceux qui choisissent la collaboration et ceux, comme le personnage interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Chow Yun Fat, qui jouent un double jeu. Du cin\u00e9ma romanesque, m\u00e9lodramatique, populaire comme pouvaient l\u2019\u00eatre les films de Hong Kong dans son \u00e2ge d\u2019or des ann\u00e9es 1980. Po-Chih Leong n\u2019est pas un immense cin\u00e9aste mais un honn\u00eate conteur, souvent inspir\u00e9, et ses trois acteurs principaux sont excellents \u2013 mention \u00e0 Chow Yun Fat, d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s s\u00e9duisant et charismatique avant de devenir la star des films de John Woo. Il a re\u00e7u le Golden Horse Film Award du meilleur acteur pour ce r\u00f4le. A noter que Ann Hui avait r\u00e9alis\u00e9, la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, <\/strong><strong><em>Love in A Fallen City<\/em><\/strong><strong>, \u00e9galement sur la p\u00e9riode de l\u2019occupation de Hong Kong par les Japonais, avec aussi Chow Yun Fat.
