Il pense \u00e0 abandonner la mise en sc\u00e8ne apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9ception provoqu\u00e9e par la suite de <em>New York 1997<\/em>, succ\u00e8s de 1981. Le projet de <em>Vampires<\/em> lui redonne momentan\u00e9ment espoir, en lui offrant la possibilit\u00e9 de r\u00e9aliser un film qui se rapproche de son genre pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9, le western \u2013 Hawks est depuis toujours son cin\u00e9aste de chevet. Situ\u00e9 dans les d\u00e9cors d\u00e9sertiques, poussi\u00e9reux et \u00e9cras\u00e9s de soleil du Nouveau Mexique, <em>Vampires <\/em>se pr\u00e9sente en effet comme un western fantastique. La vision de Carpenter rejoint celle de Kathryn Bigelow dans son film <em>Aux fronti\u00e8res de l\u2019aube<\/em> (<em>Near Dark<\/em>), r\u00e9alis\u00e9 onze ans plus t\u00f4t. Mais la cin\u00e9aste adoptait le point de vue des vampires, sortes de ren\u00e9gats modernes hantant les routes de l\u2019ouest. Carpenter opte pour celui de leurs adversaires, assimil\u00e9s \u00e0 des tueurs \u00e0 gages particuli\u00e8rement violents, vicieux et asociaux. Le film d\u00e9but par un massacre de vampires perp\u00e9tr\u00e9 par Jack Crow (James Woods) et sa bande de mercenaires. Les cr\u00e9atures de la nuit se sont r\u00e9fugi\u00e9es dans une ferme transform\u00e9e en \u00ab nid \u00bb, et les chasseurs les extirpent de l\u2019obscurit\u00e9 de leur cachette gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un treuil les exposant en plein soleil, o\u00f9 ils se consument instantan\u00e9ment. Le film de Carpenter se situe d\u2019embl\u00e9e dans l\u2019h\u00e9ritage de Sergio Leone et Sam Peckinpah, en cultivant les clich\u00e9s machistes et virilistes. Le sc\u00e9nario ne brille pas par sa subtilit\u00e9, ni sa coh\u00e9rence. Min\u00e9 par des contraintes budg\u00e9taires et une dur\u00e9e de tournage restreinte, Carpenter a recours \u00e0 des plans courts et de nombreux fondus, lui qui pr\u00e9f\u00e9rait d\u2019habitude les plans longs capables de distiller une forme d\u2019angoisse atmosph\u00e9rique. Son style a perdu de son \u00e9l\u00e9gance, en voulant y gagner en punch et en efficacit\u00e9. Ce sera encore plus flagrant dans le catastrophique <em>Ghosts of Mars<\/em>. On peut quand m\u00eame appr\u00e9cier certaines sc\u00e8nes iconiques, tr\u00e8s connot\u00e9es s\u00e9rie B, comme celle o\u00f9 le ma\u00eetre Valek et ses disciples surgissent du sable du d\u00e9sert, tels des zombies de Lucio Fulci. <em>Vampires <\/em>s\u2019apparente ainsi \u00e0 une mixture de <em>La Horde sauvage<\/em> et des petites productions du cin\u00e9ma bis, autrefois r\u00e9serv\u00e9es aux salles populaires puis converties au march\u00e9 de la vid\u00e9o. Le film est notable pour la vulgarit\u00e9 de ses dialogues, parfois improvis\u00e9s par James Woods, dont le personnage misogyne et col\u00e9rique est obs\u00e9d\u00e9 par les \u00e9rections que provoquent chez lui l\u2019extermination des vampires.
