Je n\u2019avais vu que <em>Lone Star<\/em> au moment de sa sortie en 1996. S\u2019il a aussi \u00e9crit plusieurs romans, Sayles est surtout connu pour avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 sc\u00e9nariste dans sa jeunesse pour Roger Corman au temps de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 New World Pictures (<em>Du rouge pour un truand<\/em>, <em>Les Mercenaires de l\u2019espace<\/em>). C\u2019est \u00e0 la New World Pictures qu\u2019il a d\u00e9but\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re en \u00e9crivant <em>Piranha<\/em> pour Joe Dante et la collaboration entre les deux hommes s\u2019est poursuivie avec <em>Hurlements<\/em> en 1981. Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80, Sayles continue d\u2019\u00e9crire des sc\u00e9narios de films commerciaux (<em>L\u2019Incroyable Alligator<\/em>, <em>A Armes \u00e9gales<\/em>) tandis qu\u2019il amorce en parall\u00e8le une carri\u00e8re de cin\u00e9aste. Malheureusement, la plupart de ses films a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s mal ou jamais distribu\u00e9e en France, o\u00f9 son statut d\u2019auteur demeure tr\u00e8s confidentiel, alors qu&rsquo;il occupe une place singuli\u00e8re et respect\u00e9e au sein du cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant am\u00e9ricain. Ainsi <em>Matewan <\/em>(1987) \u00e9tait totalement in\u00e9dit en France, malgr\u00e9 son succ\u00e8s d\u2019estime aux Etats-Unis, et ce BR r\u00e9pare enfin une injustice. On peut consid\u00e9rer <em>Matewan <\/em>comme un classique \u00ab secret \u00bb du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain des ann\u00e9es 80. <em>Matewan<\/em> retrace un authentique \u00e9pisode des luttes syndicales en Virginie occidentale dans les ann\u00e9es 1920. Le film est d\u2019ob\u00e9dience marxiste, et historiquement ancr\u00e9 dans un contexte tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis. Il aborde la question de la violence des usines mini\u00e8res qui ont recours \u00e0 des mercenaires pour briser les gr\u00e8ves et m\u00eame assassiner les leaders trop g\u00eanants, la corruption de certains syndicalistes, le racisme entre ouvriers, les valeurs humanistes, chr\u00e9tiennes et d\u00e9mocratiques qui peuvent parfois soutenir la cause des mineurs au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019engagement politique. C\u2019est le cas dans le film d\u2019un jeune \u00e9vang\u00e9liste et du personnage r\u00e9el du sh\u00e9rif Sid Hatfield, repr\u00e9sentant de la loi, symbole de probit\u00e9 et de courage face aux menaces et intimidations des grandes corporations. <em>Matewan <\/em>constitue une formidable d\u00e9couverte. Le film fut nomm\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019oscar de la meilleure photographie en 1988. Haskell Wexler, un des plus grands chefs-op de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, signe une image sombre et r\u00e9aliste, riche en clairs-obscurs et proche du noir et blanc. Ce tr\u00e8s beau film se signale non seulement par la force son sujet mais aussi par une mise en sc\u00e8ne n\u00e9oclassique et une interpr\u00e9tation exceptionnelle. C\u2019est la premi\u00e8re apparition \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran de Chris Cooper, dans le r\u00f4le central d\u2019un meneur de gr\u00e8ve. On y retrouve aussi le grand James Earl Jones en ouvrier noir. Il est difficile devant <em>Matewan<\/em> de ne pas penser au John Ford des <em>Raisins de la col\u00e8re<\/em>, ou au cin\u00e9ma engag\u00e9 de Martin Ritt. Le BR du film est accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019un travail \u00e9ditorial exemplaire, avec des suppl\u00e9ments sp\u00e9cialement con\u00e7us pour l\u2019\u00e9dition fran\u00e7aise, auxquels ont particip\u00e9 John Sayles et sa productrice Maggie Renzi.
