Dans le film de Peter Hyams, c\u2019est une mission sur Mars qui est annul\u00e9e au dernier moment pour \u00eatre remplac\u00e9e par une transmission t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9e tourn\u00e9e en secret dans un hangar. Ce film s\u2019inscrit dans la grande tradition des thrillers parano\u00efaques du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain des ann\u00e9es 70, contemporain d\u2019un climat de d\u00e9fiance vis-\u00e0-vis des institutions et des m\u00e9dias, dans le sillage du scandale du Watergate et de la guerre du Vietnam, dont le message \u00e9tait clairement progressiste voire libertaire. Ici, c\u2019est la NASA qui est accus\u00e9e d\u2019organiser une vaste supercherie criminelle. On retiendra \u00e0 la vision de <em>Capricorn One<\/em> l\u2019\u00e9tonnant retournement de situation par rapport aux courants conspirationnistes actuels, assimil\u00e9s \u00e0 des mouvances populistes et d\u2019extr\u00eame-droite en Europe comme aux Etats-Unis, prompts \u00e0 d\u00e9noncer des mensonges d\u2019\u00e9tat ou des manipulations scientifiques ou m\u00e9diatiques souvent d\u00e9lirantes. Le film charni\u00e8re entre ces deux appr\u00e9hensions de la parano\u00efa moderne est sans doute <em>Invasion Los Angeles<\/em> (<em>They Live<\/em>, 1988) qui fit l\u2019objet d\u2019interpr\u00e9tations contraires aux intentions de John Carpenter. Le cin\u00e9aste y d\u00e9non\u00e7ait sans ambigu\u00eft\u00e9 l\u2019ultra-lib\u00e9ralisme reaganien et le consum\u00e9risme capable de cr\u00e9er un nouveau totalitarisme politique et \u00e9conomique tandis que des courants supr\u00e9macistes am\u00e9ricains le prirent en exemple pour \u00e9tayer leurs th\u00e9ories antis\u00e9mites.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>En 1956, un classique de la science-fiction invitait de mani\u00e8re plus volontaire \u00e0 une double lecture. <em>L\u2019Invasion des profanateurs de s\u00e9pultures<\/em> peut se voir comme une critique du macchartysme et du conformisme de l\u2019\u00a0\u00bbAmerican Way of Life\u00a0\u00bb (Don Siegel \u00e9tait un cin\u00e9aste de gauche) mais ses distributeurs et une large partie du public am\u00e9ricain l\u2019appr\u00e9ci\u00e8rent comme un film \u00ab antirouge \u00bb sur les dangers d\u2019un r\u00e9gime communiste liberticide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pour revenir \u00e0 <em>Capricorn One<\/em>, il s\u2019agit d\u2019un faux film de science-fiction, et d\u2019un vrai film d\u2019action et de suspens qui ne se prend pas trop au s\u00e9rieux, contrairement aux <em>Hommes du pr\u00e9sident<\/em> ou <em>Conversation secr\u00e8te<\/em>. <em>Capricorn One<\/em> emprunte aussi au western, lorsque le d\u00e9sert brulant de Californie vient se substituer aux paysages martiens, le temps d\u2019une chasse \u00e0 l\u2019homme spectaculaire. Le personnage du journaliste enqu\u00eateur, inh\u00e9rent au thriller politique, semble avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 ajout\u00e9 et appartenir \u00e0 un autre film, d\u2019autant plus qu\u2019il est interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Elliott Gould qui a du mal \u00e0 se d\u00e9partir de sa d\u00e9contraction et de son ironie naturelle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Capricorn One<\/em><\/strong><strong> compte parmi les meilleurs films de Peter Hyams, cin\u00e9aste capable du meilleur comme du pire.
