Les nappes sonores et musicales, les strates d\u2019images flottantes, les plans hyper compos\u00e9s parviennent \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des films atmosph\u00e9riques et planants, v\u00e9ritables r\u00eaves \u00e9veill\u00e9s perc\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9clairs de violence. Le cin\u00e9aste r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour son perfectionnisme semble parfois h\u00e9siter entre l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 dramatique et la qu\u00eate de la pure exp\u00e9rience sensitive, le besoin de raconter une histoire solide avec des vedettes (nous sommes \u00e0 Hollywood et un film doit rapporter de l\u2019argent) et le d\u00e9sir de composer des plans vertigineux \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un peintre, d\u2019un musicien, d\u2019un architecte, d\u2019un artiste. Ainsi, <em>Collat\u00e9ral <\/em>(<em>Collateral<\/em>, 2004), l\u2019un de ses plus gros succ\u00e8s commerciaux, peut \u00eatre appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 comme un polar captivant rythm\u00e9 par des sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action de plus en plus spectaculaires, et des rebondissements de sc\u00e9nario de plus en plus invraisemblables, avec une star au sommet de son charisme et parfait dans un contre-emploi de tueur \u00e0 gages froid et impitoyable (Tom Cruise). Mais <em>Collat\u00e9ral <\/em>est avant tout un magnifique po\u00e8me visuel consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 Los Angeles la nuit, et cela fait toute la diff\u00e9rence entre le film de Michael Mann et n\u2019importe quel polar am\u00e9ricain, aussi r\u00e9ussi soit-il. Pionner de la HD \u00e0 Hollywood, Mann utilise pour la premi\u00e8re fois une cam\u00e9ra Thomson Grass Valley <\/strong><strong>Viper FilmStream modifi\u00e9e, exclusivement pour les sc\u00e8nes d\u2019ext\u00e9rieurs nocturnes qui constituent une large partie du film, qui se d\u00e9roule pendant une seule nuit dans plusieurs quartiers de Los Angeles. Mann rel\u00e8ve le nouveau d\u00e9fi d\u2019un tournage en num\u00e9rique avec <\/strong><strong>une inventivit\u00e9 et une ma\u00eetrise \u00e9blouissantes, qui conf\u00e8rent \u00e0 ses images une texture si particuli\u00e8re, dans les noirs et les gris bleut\u00e9s.
