C\u2019\u00e9tait un retour aux sources pour celui qui avait r\u00e9volutionn\u00e9 tr\u00e8s jeune la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision am\u00e9ricaine en exp\u00e9rimentant des m\u00e9thodes de tournage en direct dans les ann\u00e9es 50 et jusqu\u2019au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 60 avant d\u2019initier une brillante carri\u00e8re \u00e0 Hollywood. Les t\u00e9l\u00e9films <em>Against the Wall<\/em>, <em>The Burning<\/em> <em>Season<\/em>, <em>Andersonville<\/em> et <em>George Wallace<\/em> montraient un Frankenheimer engag\u00e9 et en pleine possession de ses moyens, tandis que <em>L\u2019\u00eele du docteur Moreau<\/em> avait \u00e9t\u00e9 la pire exp\u00e9rience cin\u00e9matographique du cin\u00e9aste, avec un r\u00e9sultat d\u00e9sastreux.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ronin <\/em><\/strong><strong>peut se voir comme un \u00e9loge du professionnalisme, et une remise en forme. John Frankenheimer donne une le\u00e7on de mise en sc\u00e8ne et d\u00e9montre qu\u2019il n\u2019a rien perdu de sa virtuosit\u00e9 pour orchestrer ce thriller spectaculaire, avec une grande ma\u00eetrise de l\u2019espace et du temps. A la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un film de Melville, <em>Ronin<\/em> tend vers l\u2019abstraction. Le sc\u00e9nario, (un groupe de mercenaires est recrut\u00e9 pour d\u00e9rober une mallette dont on ne conna\u00eetra jamais le contenu), n\u2019est qu\u2019un pr\u00e9texte pour d\u00e9peindre un monde secret o\u00f9 \u00e9voluent des figures archa\u00efques, condamn\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019errance comme les r\u00f4nins du Japon m\u00e9di\u00e9val. L\u2019ambigu\u00eft\u00e9 morale a toujours fascin\u00e9 Frankenheimer, et les personnages de <em>Ronin<\/em> se caract\u00e9risent tous par un comportement violent, asocial et criminel. L\u2019intrigue renoue avec les r\u00e9cits d\u2019espionnage hitchcockiens avec une succession de trahisons, de retournements de situation et de coups de th\u00e9\u00e2tre.
