Un tel accomplissement dans la filmographie de Losey n\u2019allait se reproduire qu\u2019en 1976 avec <em>Mr. Klein<\/em>, tourn\u00e9 en France avec Alain Delon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Le Messager<\/em> se d\u00e9roule dans la campagne de Norfolk, au tout d\u00e9but du si\u00e8cle dernier. Leo Colston (Dominic Guard), un jeune gar\u00e7on d\u2019origine modeste, est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 passer l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 chez Marcus (Richard Gibson), un camarade de classe issu de l\u2019aristocratie. Leo d\u00e9couvre le gigantesque manoir de Brandham Hall et une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9gie par des codes qui lui \u00e9chappent. Il est fascin\u00e9 par la s\u0153ur a\u00een\u00e9e de son ami, la belle Marian (Julie Christie), fianc\u00e9e \u00e0 un lord. Marian va demander \u00e0 Leo de devenir son \u00ab messager \u00bb et de transmettre en secret des lettres \u00e0 son amant, Ted Burgess (Alan Bates), un m\u00e9tayer qui travaille dans une ferme voisine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans le roman de L.P. Hartley, ces souvenirs d\u2019un \u00e9t\u00e9 caniculaire \u00e0 la conclusion tragique sont encadr\u00e9s par un prologue et un \u00e9pilogue. Leo, devenu adulte, revient sur les lieux des vacances de ses treize ans et retrouve Marian, vieille dame prostr\u00e9e dans ses illusions. Joseph Losey et son sc\u00e9nariste Harold Pinter proc\u00e8dent \u00e0 une complexification de la structure narrative de la source litt\u00e9raire et proposent un r\u00e9cit o\u00f9 deux \u00e9poques se chevauchent de mani\u00e8re extr\u00eamement subtile. Le classicisme apparent de la mise en sc\u00e8ne de Losey est contredit par une \u00e9criture temporelle moderniste qui transcende l\u2019usage traditionnel du flash-back et se r\u00e9v\u00e8le finalement plus proche de William Faulkner, Henry James ou Marcel Proust que de L. P. Hartley (\u2026)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Losey vouait une profonde admiration \u00e0 Alain Resnais et il n\u2019a jamais cach\u00e9 l\u2019influence que l\u2019auteur d\u2019<em>Hiroshima mon amour <\/em>avait eu sur son travail \u00e0 partir d\u2019<em>Eva<\/em>. Il ne fait aucun doute que <em>Le Messager<\/em> doit beaucoup \u00e0 des films comme <em>Muriel ou le temps d\u2019un retour<\/em> (1963) et <em>La guerre est finie<\/em> (1966). Chez Resnais, le temps est multidimensionnel et le cin\u00e9aste op\u00e8re gr\u00e2ce au montage la fusion entre pass\u00e9, pr\u00e9sent et futur. Dans <em>Le Messager<\/em>, Losey parvient \u00e0 son tour \u00e0 supprimer la lin\u00e9arit\u00e9 du temps. Il conf\u00e8re aux images du pr\u00e9sent une forme fragmentaire et concise, tandis que sa mise en sc\u00e8ne acc\u00e8de \u00e0 un certain lyrisme, nimb\u00e9 d\u2019une lumi\u00e8re sublime, lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019\u00e9voquer l\u2019inoubliable exp\u00e9rience estivale du jeune gar\u00e7on. Sans l\u2019indice donn\u00e9 par le g\u00e9n\u00e9rique, nous pourrions penser que le film se d\u00e9roule au pr\u00e9sent, et que les images d\u2019une autre \u00e9poque sont en fait des projections dans le futur. En accordant au r\u00e9cit situ\u00e9 dans le pass\u00e9 une valeur romanesque et all\u00e9gorique, le film d\u00e9montre que les souvenirs du vieil homme sont aussi une \u0153uvre de cr\u00e9ation et d\u2019imagination, et non pas la simple retranscription de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Losey avait sans doute l\u2019intention d\u2019expliciter cette intention en confiant le r\u00f4le de Leo adulte \u00e0 Hartley lui-m\u00eame. Le vieil homme est finalement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Michael Redgrave, qui jouait le personnage principal de <em>Temps sans piti\u00e9<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(\u2026)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>De film en film, Losey n\u2019a jamais cess\u00e9 de d\u00e9noncer l\u2019emprise corruptrice et destructrice de l\u2019homme sur l\u2019homme, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle sentimentale, morale, sociale ou historique. Le propos du <em>Messager<\/em> est d\u2019autant plus cruel que la victime est un enfant, transform\u00e9 en complice et voyeur malgr\u00e9 lui, qui sera d\u00e9truit psychologiquement par des amants pour lesquels cette correspondance secr\u00e8te ajoute de l\u2019excitation \u00e0 leur liaison sexuelle. Losey se livre \u00e0 l\u2019analyse de l\u2019attitude inconsciemment \u00e9go\u00efste et manipulatrice que deux adultes d\u00e9veloppent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard d\u2019un enfant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Le Messager<\/em> vient d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e9dit\u00e9 en combo blu-ray et DVD par Esc.
