Ce film tr\u00e8s ambitieux fit forte impression au moment de sa sortie, malgr\u00e9 son \u00e9chec public. Cin\u00e9philes un brin potache au d\u00e9but de leur carri\u00e8re, les fr\u00e8res Cohen avaient d\u00e9cid\u00e9 avec leur troisi\u00e8me long m\u00e9trage de r\u00e9aliser le polar mani\u00e9riste ultime, en puisant pour cela dans trente ans de relecture d&rsquo;un genre touch\u00e9 par la m\u00e9lancolie et des d\u00e9tournements formalistes inattendus d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 60. Une histoire d&rsquo;amiti\u00e9 et de trahison entre gangsters, associ\u00e9e \u00e0 la symbolique du couvre-chef ? On pense bien s\u00fbr au <em>Doulos<\/em> de Jean-Pierre Melville. Un tueur qui \u00e9volue entre deux camps rivaux, semant la violence sur son passage ? On pense bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 une nouvelle version pirate de <em>La Moisson rouge<\/em> de Dashiell Hammett, pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment adapt\u00e9 en film de samoura\u00efs dans <em>Yojimbo<\/em> d&rsquo;Akira Kurosawa et en western italien dans <em>Pour une poign\u00e9e de dollars<\/em> de Sergio Leone. Un soin maniaque accord\u00e9 aux costumes et aux ambiances r\u00e9tros, stylis\u00e9es avec un luxe inou\u00ef\u00a0? Une femme entre deux hommes ? On pense \u00e0 <em>Il \u00e9tait une fois en Am\u00e9rique<\/em> toujours de Leone\u2026 En \u00e9grenant cette longue liste de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences, on n&rsquo;oublie pas que les fr\u00e8res Coen ne sont pas que des copieurs sans originalit\u00e9. Ils brillent gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur sens de l&rsquo;humour noir et leur talent \u00e0 inventer une galerie de seconds r\u00f4les magnifiquement \u00e9crits et interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s (par exemple le voyou homosexuel camp\u00e9 par John Turturro). Les arabesques de la mise en sc\u00e8ne dessinent des circonvolutions tortueuses. Les d\u00e9cors circulaires et confin\u00e9s enferment les personnages dans des espaces qui \u00e9voquent une prison mentale.
