Ce cinqui\u00e8me long m\u00e9trage ouvre des perspectives nouvelles dans la filmographie de son r\u00e9alisateur et s\u2019impose comme l\u2019un des chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain de ce d\u00e9but de XXI\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. Magistralement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9, \u00e9crit en mis en sc\u00e8ne, There Will Be Blood propose une r\u00e9flexion sur la naissance du capitalisme moderne aux \u00c9tats-Unis, \u00e0 travers le portrait d\u2019un prospecteur devenu magnat du p\u00e9trole, de 1898 \u00e0 l\u2019or\u00e9e de la grande d\u00e9pression boursi\u00e8re. Le film est une adaptation de Oil!, roman de Upton Sinclair publi\u00e9 en 1927. Sinclair, \u00e9crivain, journaliste et politicien, fut l\u2019un des promoteurs du socialisme aux \u00c9tats-Unis, et finit par rejoindre l\u2019aile gauche du Parti d\u00e9mocrate. Le projet est port\u00e9 pendant plusieurs ann\u00e9es par le jeune prodige, qui est son propre producteur et doit surmonter la frilosit\u00e9 des studios hollywoodiens. Perfectionniste, PTA accumule comme \u00e0 son habitude une documentation \u00e9norme sur le sujet, l\u2019\u00e9poque et le milieu du p\u00e9trole. Il d\u00e9laisse les fictions chorales qui firent sa r\u00e9putation pour se concentrer sur l\u2019itin\u00e9raire d\u2019un personnage aussi myst\u00e9rieux que n\u00e9gatif. Menteur, voleur et tueur, Daniel Plainview incarne le fond de sauvagerie et la d\u00e9termination sans limites qui anim\u00e8rent les pionniers pr\u00eats \u00e0 tout pour faire fortune. Le style du film adopte la vision obsessionnelle et violente de son protagoniste, dont les yeux semblent transpercer ses adversaires. <em>There Will Be Blood <\/em>est un western moderne dans lequel les vastes \u00e9tendues arides de la Californie se transforment en paysage mental dans la cam\u00e9ra de PTA. Du trou dans le d\u00e9sert o\u00f9 il recherche de l\u2019or et de l\u2019argent jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019immense propri\u00e9t\u00e9 o\u00f9 il vit clo\u00eetr\u00e9 \u00e0 la fin du film, Plainview apparait comme un \u00eatre opaque mur\u00e9 dans sa solitude et sa folie, n\u2019agissant que par calcul \u00e9go\u00efste. La famille, la communaut\u00e9 et la foi chr\u00e9tienne, creusets de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique, sont m\u00e9pris\u00e9es, manipul\u00e9es et finalement saccag\u00e9es par son individualisme f\u00e9roce. La bande sonore \u2013 extraordinaire cr\u00e9ation bruitiste et m\u00e9tallique de Johnny Greenwood \u2013 ne fait qu\u2019amplifier la qualit\u00e9 de film-cerveau de <em>There Will Be Blood<\/em>, comparable par bien des aspects \u00e0 celle de <em>Shining<\/em> de S. Kubrick.
