Adaptation d\u2019une nouvelle de Philip K. Dick d\u2019abord pass\u00e9e entre les mains de David Cronenberg, sc\u00e9naris\u00e9e par l\u2019excellent Dan O\u2019Bannon, sp\u00e9cialiste de la SF et du fantastique, <em>Total Recall<\/em>\u00a0est port\u00e9 par la superstar tout en muscles Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mais le film n\u2019est pas un simple v\u00e9hicule pour les exploits surhumains du \u00ab\u00a0ch\u00eane autrichien\u00a0\u00bb. Verhoeven s\u2019empare de cette commande pour signer un film extraordinaire. On sent sa jubilation \u00e0 disposer de moyens consid\u00e9rables pour mettre en sc\u00e8ne une production spectaculaire o\u00f9 il peut renouer avec ses th\u00e8mes de pr\u00e9dilection et certains motifs visuels r\u00e9currents depuis ses premiers films en Hollande. Verhoeven a toujours clam\u00e9 son admiration pour Alfred Hitchcock, l\u2019un de ses ma\u00eetres.\u00a0<em>Total Recall<\/em>\u00a0joue sur la confusion entre r\u00eave et r\u00e9alit\u00e9, comme dans la nouvelle de Dick. Mais le film transpose aussi dans l\u2019univers du space opera une chasse \u00e0 l\u2019homme riche en rebondissements et en coups de th\u00e9\u00e2tre. L\u2019inspiration de Verhoeven semble provenir directement de\u00a0<em>La Mort aux trousses<\/em>, chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre du cin\u00e9ma d\u2019espionnage moderne, dont il livre une relecture triviale et ironique. Doug Quaid, le personnage interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Schwarzenegger est pris au pi\u00e8ge de se deux identit\u00e9s successives, un agent secret cynique et un simple ouvrier entra\u00een\u00e9 dans une r\u00e9bellion des colons de la plan\u00e8te Mars. Quaid r\u00e9unit dans la m\u00eame enveloppe physique Roger Thornhill, h\u00e9ros malgr\u00e9 lui du film d\u2019Hitchcock, et le myst\u00e9rieux espion Kaplan avec lequel il est confondu par erreur (et qui se r\u00e9v\u00e8lera un fant\u00f4me, un nom sans r\u00e9elle existence). Les deux super m\u00e9chants de\u00a0<em>Total Recall<\/em>, le tyrannique Cohaagen et son homme de main Richter, li\u00e9s par une relation sadomasochiste, renvoient \u00e9galement au couple ambigu form\u00e9 par James Mason et Martin Landau dans\u00a0<em>La Mort aux trousses<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Total Recall<\/em>\u00a0bouscule les clich\u00e9s machistes du cin\u00e9ma d\u2019action am\u00e9ricain, en accordant \u00e0 ses personnages f\u00e9minins une dualit\u00e9 et une puissance \u00e9gales sinon sup\u00e9rieures \u00e0 celles des hommes. Deux ans avant\u00a0<em>Basic Instinct<\/em>, Sharon Stone y interpr\u00e8te une femme aux deux visages, \u00e0 la fois \u00e9pouse aimante et tueuse impitoyable. Verhoeven temp\u00e8re les exc\u00e8s de violence de son film par de nombreuses touches d\u2019humour. Les mauvais traitements inflig\u00e9s au corps humain lors des nombreuses sc\u00e8nes de fusillades ou de combats \u00e0 mains nues s\u2019accompagnent de multiples transformations et d\u00e9formations physiques grotesques, qui n\u2019\u00e9pargnent pas le visage de Schwarzenegger, travesti en femme ob\u00e8se pour \u00e9chapper \u00e0 ses poursuivants ou sur le point d\u2019\u00e9clater au contact de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne.
