La jeune fille, timide et sans grands attraits, fait la rencontre du s\u00e9duisant Morris Townsend lors d\u2019un bal. Le jeune homme lui fait aussit\u00f4t une cour empress\u00e9e. Devenant un habitu\u00e9 de la maison des Sloper, il demande la main de Catherine \u00e0 son p\u00e8re. Mais, celui-ci ne tarde pas \u00e0 accuser le jeune homme d\u2019\u00eatre un coureur de dot et refuse\u2026 \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>William Wyler n\u2019est toujours pas sorti du purgatoire de la cin\u00e9philie. Jamais un cin\u00e9aste am\u00e9ricain n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 autant admir\u00e9 et couvert de lauriers de son vivant puis m\u00e9pris\u00e9 et oubli\u00e9 par les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations suivantes. Son \u0153uvre suscite au mieux un ennui poli, et le cin\u00e9aste est d\u00e9sormais consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un parangon d\u2019acad\u00e9misme impersonnel. C\u2019est assez injuste et Wyler m\u00e9rite d\u2019\u00eatre red\u00e9couvert, et certains de ses films, pas forc\u00e9ment les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres, r\u00e9\u00e9valu\u00e9s. Mais ses grands succ\u00e8s sont aussi \u00e0 la hauteur de leur r\u00e9putation :\u00a0<em>Les Plus Belles Ann\u00e9es de notre vie<\/em>\u00a0(1946) est un chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre tandis que\u00a0<em>Ben-Hur\u00a0<\/em>(1960), l\u2019une des plus spectaculaires superproductions hollywoodiennes jamais r\u00e9alis\u00e9es, continue de ridiculiser les blockbusters contemporains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>L\u2019H\u00e9riti\u00e8re<\/em> appartient \u00e0 la s\u00e9rie des films de prestige que Wyler r\u00e9alisa dans les ann\u00e9es 30 et 40, productions en costumes adapt\u00e9es d\u2019\u0153uvres litt\u00e9raires. Le film s\u2019inspire d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, elle-m\u00eame tir\u00e9e du roman de Henry James \u00ab Washington Square \u00bb. Cette histoire cruelle se d\u00e9roule presque enti\u00e8rement dans une demeure de la haute soci\u00e9t\u00e9 new-yorkaise. Wyler renforce ce sentiment d\u2019enfermement par son utilisation subtile des d\u00e9cors tandis que sa mise en sc\u00e8ne privil\u00e9gie les longs plans et accentue la profondeur de champ. Ainsi Wyler ne cherche pas \u00e0 effacer les origines th\u00e9\u00e2trales de son film mais les int\u00e8gre au contraire dans sa gestion de l\u2019espace et du cadre, remarquables.\u00a0<em>L\u2019H\u00e9riti\u00e8re<\/em>\u00a0repose sur des bases solides, mais l\u2019ensemble est transcend\u00e9 par la qualit\u00e9 exceptionnelle de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation, confi\u00e9e \u00e0 un quatuor de com\u00e9diens venus d\u2019horizons divers\u00a0: le shakespearien Ralph Richardson dans le r\u00f4le du p\u00e8re, Miriam Hopkins dans celui de la tante, le jeune Montgomery Clift dans celui du pr\u00e9tendant ambigu et Olivia de Havilland dans celui de l\u2019h\u00e9riti\u00e8re. Olivia de Havilland qui fut l\u2019une des incarnations du glamour hollywoodien \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran est g\u00e9niale dans ce r\u00f4le de composition, enlaidie par le maquillage pour interpr\u00e9ter une jeune femme au physique ingrat et aux mani\u00e8res maladroites. Elle justifie \u00e0 elle seule le visionnage de\u00a0<em>L\u2019H\u00e9riti\u00e8re<\/em>. C\u2019est de la belle ouvrage. Wyler se montre peut-\u00eatre sans g\u00e9nie mais son perfectionnisme et la pr\u00e9cision de sa direction d\u2019acteurs accouchent d\u2019un excellent drame psychologique, quintessence du \u00ab\u00a0women\u2019s picture\u00a0\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>La performance d&rsquo;Olivia de Havilland fut r\u00e9compens\u00e9e par l&rsquo;Oscar de la meilleure actrice en 1950.
