Le film sera \u00e9galement disponible en t\u00e9l\u00e9vision de rattrapage sur ARTE.tv jusqu&rsquo;au 17 mai 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>En 1921, deux jeunes s\u0153urs polonaises d\u00e9barquent \u00e0 New York. L\u2019une est tuberculeuse et doit rester \u00e0 Ellis Island en quarantaine. L\u2019autre, Ewa, qui parle bien l\u2019Anglais, se retrouve seule et doit se d\u00e9brouiller pour survivre. Elle est rep\u00e9r\u00e9e par un homme, Bruno, qui se propose de l\u2019aider et qui devient son souteneur. Contrainte \u00e0 la prostitution, Ewa sombre dans le d\u00e9sespoir jusqu\u2019au jour o\u00f9 elle rencontre un magicien, Orlando, qui lui redonne confiance. Mais c\u2019est sans compter sur la jalousie de Bruno, qui est le cousin d\u2019Orlando et lui voue une rancune tenace.\u00a0<em>Two Lovers<\/em>\u00a0le chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent de Gray \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 un m\u00e9lodrame new yorkais et un triangle amoureux impossible : un homme d\u00e9chir\u00e9 entre deux femmes.\u00a0<em>The Immigrant<\/em>\u00a0est un m\u00e9lodrame encore plus douloureux, pr\u00e8s d\u2019un si\u00e8cle plus t\u00f4t dans la m\u00eame ville. Cette fois-ci il s\u2019agit d\u2019une femme partag\u00e9e entre deux hommes. L\u2019un l\u2019exploite, l\u2019autre veut la sauver, mais les choses ne sont pas aussi simples. Bruno est une \u00e2me sombre et tortur\u00e9e, un salaud qui va tomber amoureux de la femme qu\u2019il prostitue et trouver le chemin de la r\u00e9demption. Orlando est charmant, mais n\u2019est-il pas un vendeur d\u2019illusions, comme ses spectacles de prestidigitation qui distraient le peuple de sa mis\u00e8re. Ewa oscille entre passivit\u00e9, abn\u00e9gation et volont\u00e9 de survivre \u00e0 tout prix, avec aussi l\u2019id\u00e9e fixe de ne jamais abandonner sa s\u0153ur. Elle est film\u00e9e avec amour et admiration par James Gray, qui remonte aux sources de sa radioscopie \u00e9conomique, politique et romanesque du New York du XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>James Gray proc\u00e8de \u00e0 une \u00e9pure de son art, et\u00a0<em>The Immigrant<\/em>\u00a0s\u2019apparente souvent \u00e0 une forme de kammerspiel m\u00e2tin\u00e9 de cin\u00e9ma muet. Le dernier plan est celui d\u2019un ma\u00eetre. Le travail du directeur de la photographie Darius Khondji, pour sa premi\u00e8re collaboration avec Gray, est magnifique.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le film \u00e9voque aussi une version minimaliste de mod\u00e8les plus r\u00e9cents de fresques historiques comme\u00a0<em>La Porte du paradis<\/em>\u00a0(le triangle amoureux, la lutte des classes),\u00a0<em>Le Parrain, 2<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup>\u00a0partie<\/em>\u00a0(l\u2019arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Ellis Island),\u00a0<em>Il \u00e9tait une fois en Am\u00e9rique<\/em>\u00a0(la p\u00e8gre new yorkaise) qui comptent depuis\u00a0<em>Little Odessa<\/em>\u00a0et\u00a0<em>The Yards<\/em>\u00a0parmi les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e9videntes de Gray.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mais\u00a0<em>The Immigrant<\/em> \u00e9voque encore plus les m\u00e9lodrames muets r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque de son action, et en particulier ceux de Chaplin. Le calvaire d\u2019Ewa rejoint celui des fr\u00eales h\u00e9ro\u00efnes du muet oblig\u00e9es d\u2019\u00e9voluer dans les bas-fonds de la ville, entre souillure et espoir de trouver le salut. Il faut saluer la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation et de la direction d\u2019acteurs. Joachin Phoenix impressionnant, Jeremy Renner nouveau venu excellent dans l\u2019univers de Gray et Marion Cotillard que nous avons trouv\u00e9 admirable de bout en bout.
