Chaque incursion du cin\u00e9aste dans ce genre \u00ab am\u00e9ricain par excellence \u00bb est un jalon important dans sa carri\u00e8re, exprime une des diff\u00e9rentes facettes de son art : la conscience politique dans <em>Bronco Apache<\/em>, le baroque dans <em>Vera Cruz<\/em>, la vulgarit\u00e9 dans\u00a0<em>Quatre du Texas<\/em>, le d\u00e9senchantement dans\u00a0<em>Fureur Apache<\/em>, l\u2019humour picaresque dans\u00a0<em>Un rabbin au Far West<\/em>. Autant de titres essentiels (\u00e0 l\u2019exception du m\u00e9diocre et lourdement parodique\u00a0<em>Quatre du Texas<\/em>, et du faiblard\u00a0<em>Un rabbin au Far West<\/em>) qui accompagnent, des ann\u00e9es 50 \u00e0 70, le cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain dans ses m\u00e9tamorphoses esth\u00e9tiques et th\u00e9matiques.\u00a0<em>El Perdido<\/em>\u00a0(1961) est \u00e0 la fois un film somme qui r\u00e9capitule ses principaux succ\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es 50 et un chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre qui d\u00e9voile dans le cin\u00e9ma d\u2019Aldrich des perspectives nouvelles et particuli\u00e8rement ambitieuses que le cin\u00e9aste explorera lors de deux d\u00e9cennies suivantes.\u00a0<em>El Perdido<\/em>\u00a0ne jouit pas d\u2019une r\u00e9putation exceptionnelle. Tourn\u00e9 \u00e0 la veille du triomphe de\u00a0<em>Qu\u2019est-il arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Baby Jane ?<\/em>\u00a0lors d\u2019une p\u00e9riode difficile pour Aldrich qui avait d\u00fb auparavant s\u2019exiler en Europe, le film souffrit des conflits incessants entre le cin\u00e9aste et son producteur vedette Kirk Douglas, et du faible int\u00e9r\u00eat qu\u2019apporta le sc\u00e9nariste Dalton Trumbo \u00e0 son travail.\u00a0<em>El Perdido<\/em> est pourtant un western admirable, \u00ab\u00a0cr\u00e9pusculaire\u00a0\u00bb pour paraphraser son titre original. Aldrich renonce d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment aux grands espaces et aux chevauch\u00e9es spectaculaires pour r\u00e9aliser un western intimiste et violent centr\u00e9 autour de personnages complexes et tourment\u00e9s, rong\u00e9 par le remords, la l\u00e2chet\u00e9, sans parler du d\u00e9sir sexuel et de la perversit\u00e9 qui vont peu \u00e0 peu contaminer l\u2019\u0153uvre aldrichienne. Interpr\u00e9tation admirable de Rock Hudson, Joseph Cotten et Dorothy Malone.
