Fid\u00e8le \u00e0 son go\u00fbt pour l\u2019exc\u00e8s, Argento va appr\u00e9hender ce retour au thriller sous l\u2019angle de l\u2019ultraviolence et de l\u2019introspection. Il s\u2019inspire d\u2019une m\u00e9saventure survenue \u00e0 New York durant la pr\u00e9paration d\u2019<em>Inferno<\/em> \u2013 des menaces de mort t\u00e9l\u00e9phoniques d\u2019un admirateur d\u00e9rang\u00e9 \u2013 pour imaginer l\u2019histoire d\u2019un \u00e9crivain de romans policiers \u00e0 succ\u00e8s, m\u00eal\u00e9 \u00e0 une s\u00e9rie de meurtres commis par un lecteur fanatique. Le directeur de la photographie Luciano Tovoli nimbe le film d\u2019une lumi\u00e8re blanche et clinique qui d\u00e9laisse les zones d\u2019ombres du cin\u00e9ma d\u2019horreur pour au contraire tout montrer, dans un environnement moderne et anonyme, le quartier romain de l\u2019Eur. Le morceau de bravoure du film est l\u2019exploration d\u2019une maison par un regard omniscient qui survole le toit et observe de futures victimes par les fen\u00eatres, sur une musique tonitruante de Claudio Simonetti. Ce plan-s\u00e9quence virtuose a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 avec la Louma, cam\u00e9ra plac\u00e9e sur un bras t\u00e9lescopique et contr\u00f4l\u00e9e \u00e0 distance, utilis\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque du tournage pour apporter une fluidit\u00e9 et une agilit\u00e9 in\u00e9dites aux prises de vues. L\u2019hyper-r\u00e9alisme de <em>T\u00e9n\u00e8bres<\/em>, son esth\u00e9tisme inspir\u00e9 par les s\u00e9ries t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9es am\u00e9ricaines des ann\u00e9es 80 ne font qu\u2019accentuer la cruaut\u00e9, la froideur et la brutalit\u00e9 du film. (Presque) tous les personnages sont antipathiques et p\u00e9rissent sous des coups de couteau, de rasoir ou de hache, hommes et femmes confondus dans une m\u00eame rage nihiliste. La misanthropie d\u2019Argento s\u2019exprime surtout \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des personnages masculins, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par des bell\u00e2tres sur le retour. Ses actrices incarnent une sexualit\u00e9 charnelle et agressive, impitoyablement punie. Seule la chaste Daria Nicolodi est exclue de ce jeu de massacre \u00e9rotique et morbide o\u00f9 les meurtres \u00e0 l\u2019arme blanche sont film\u00e9s comme des viols. Il n\u2019est pas seulement question de guerre des sexes et de confusion mentale dans <em>T\u00e9n\u00e8bres<\/em>. Le film, le plus sanglant de son auteur, capte au-del\u00e0 de son intrigue polici\u00e8re absurde le climat de violence terroriste et de contamination du crime dans toutes les strates de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qui r\u00e9gnaient dans l\u2019Italie du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80.
