Desplechin prend comme point de d\u00e9part un mat\u00e9riau documentaire. Il s\u2019inspire de plusieurs histoires vraies et en particulier d\u2019un fait-divers criminel sordide. Pourtant cette immersion \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 la plus crue se r\u00e9v\u00e8le un d\u00e9tour pour revenir au cin\u00e9ma, et \u00e0 la litt\u00e9rature, qui ont toujours nourri l\u2019oeuvre de Desplechin. Le cin\u00e9aste tourne le dos au naturalisme et adopte un style volontairement th\u00e9\u00e2tral, inattendu dans un tel contexte. La pr\u00e9cision et la richesse des dialogues, l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation magistrale confirme que Desplechin est un directeur d\u2019acteurs g\u00e9nial. Devant sa cam\u00e9ra, il ne demande pas d\u2019\u00eatre, mais de jouer, de composer. Fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 \u00e0 Bergman oblige. Et c\u2019est dans le souci du texte, l\u2019incarnation d\u2019un personnage que pourront na\u00eetre le sens, la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 du film. Dans cette succession d\u2019affrontements et de confrontations verbales, les mots occupent une place primordiale. Faut-il pr\u00e9ciser que L\u00e9a Seydoux et Sara Forestier sont prodigieuses ? elles d\u00e9livrent toutes deux des performances inoubliables et d\u2019une intensit\u00e9 rarement \u00e9gal\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran. Le film appartient sans ambages au genre policier. Il s\u2019inscrit dans une certaine tradition cin\u00e9matographique fran\u00e7aise par sa description de la vie quotidienne des flics d\u2019un commissariat, et des m\u00e9thodes d\u2019investigation d\u2019un commissaire charismatique et intuitif, en charge de plusieurs enqu\u00eates. On pense \u00e0 Jean-Pierre Melville ou Georges Simenon par le sens aigu de l\u2019\u00e9tude comportementalisme et la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 des portraits humains, en particulier le commissaire Daoud (Roschy Zem), d\u00e9crit comme un prince solitaire de la ville, for\u00e7ant le respect et l\u2019admiration de tous, et Louis (<\/strong><strong>Antoine Reinartz)<\/strong><strong>, jeune policier catholique fra\u00eechement dipl\u00f4m\u00e9, maladroit et na\u00eff. Mais les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences majeures de Desplechin demeurent Hitchcock et Dosto\u00efevski, plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment <em>Le Faux Coupable<\/em> et <em>Crime et Ch\u00e2timent<\/em>. En s\u2019int\u00e9ressant au meurtre gratuit d\u2019une vieille femme, le cin\u00e9aste d\u00e9livre une r\u00e9flexion sur le mal, la culpabilit\u00e9 et la piti\u00e9, accordant autant d\u2019attention aux bourreaux et aux victimes, intimement li\u00e9es par la m\u00eame mis\u00e8re morale et mat\u00e9rielle.
