Il est \u00e9vident que ce film est le produit d\u2019une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 le cin\u00e9ma n\u2019avait pas peur de choquer et de d\u00e9plaire. Ce pouvait m\u00eame \u00eatre, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion, un argument commercial. Film \u00e0 gros budget produit par Dino De Laurentiis, <em>Mandingo<\/em> est une fresque historique con\u00e7ue comme l\u2019antith\u00e8se trash d\u2019<em>Autant en emporte le vent<\/em>, bien en phase avec les relectures r\u00e9visionnistes des ann\u00e9es 70. Le sc\u00e9nario est sign\u00e9 Norman Wexler, qui venait d\u2019\u00e9crire deux films importants \u00e0 fort contenu politique produit par De Laurentiis, <em>Joe<\/em> (sur un personnage d\u2019Am\u00e9ricain moyen fasciste) et <em>Serpico<\/em> (sur un flic id\u00e9aliste victime de la corruption de la police new yorkaise). Et aussi <em>La Fi\u00e8vre du samedi soir<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fleischer a refus\u00e9 dix fois la proposition de Dino de Laurentiis mais a finalement accept\u00e9 \u00e0 condition d\u2019\u00eatre le plus honn\u00eate possible avec le mat\u00e9riau de base du film. Fleischer a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 au sujet du film : \u00ab\u00a0Mon <em>Mandingo<\/em>\u00a0est un reflet v\u00e9ridique de cette \u00e9poque. Et s\u2019il est vrai qu\u2019il se montre m\u00e9lodramatique par endroits, il n\u2019en est pas moins un portrait rigoureusement exact des horreurs de l\u2019esclavage.\u00a0\u00bb Fleischer a aussi \u00e9voqu\u00e9 dans un entretien un premier montage d\u2019une dur\u00e9e de 3h45 qu\u2019il jugeait plus fid\u00e8le \u00e0 ses intentions, mais qu\u2019il dut in\u00e9vitablement r\u00e9duire pour l\u2019exploitation commerciale du film.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Quand on revoit <em>Mandingo<\/em> aujourd\u2019hui on est encore horrifi\u00e9 par son contenu violent et sexuel souvent insoutenable qui dresse un portrait sans concession de l\u2019esclavagisme et de l\u2019aristocratie sudiste. A cause de certaines sc\u00e8nes scabreuses et de son langage ordurier et raciste un tel film serait impensable de nos jours et ne franchirait pas les barri\u00e8res de la censure et surtout de l\u2019autocensure des studios. Si Fleischer, toujours d\u2019une grande modestie et d\u2019une grande discr\u00e9tion, prit la peine de d\u00e9fendre son film et d\u2019exposer ses intentions, c\u2019est que <em>Mandingo<\/em> fut longtemps consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un pur produit d\u2019exploitation, entre roman de gare et pornographie hollywoodienne voyeuriste et racoleuse. C\u2019est faux et le film m\u00e9rite r\u00e9\u00e9valuation, au m\u00eame titre que les films les plus controvers\u00e9s de Sam Peckinpah (<em>Croix de fer<\/em>), Robert Aldrich (<em>Bande de flics<\/em>) ou Samuel Fuller (<em>Dress\u00e9 pour tuer<\/em>). Ce n\u2019est pas parce qu\u2019un film met en sc\u00e8ne des personnages racistes qu\u2019il est lui-m\u00eame raciste. Fleischer n\u2019a pas peur de se confronter \u00e0 l\u2019horreur de l\u2019histoire et ne renonce pas \u00e0 un point de vue moral m\u00eame et surtout lorsqu\u2019il filme des individus abjects (voir <em>L\u2019Etrangleur de Rillington Place<\/em>). Ce qui surprend encore plus de la part de Fleischer, ce sont des partis-pris stylistiques comme le zoom qui d\u00e9tonnent chez un cin\u00e9aste classique qui a toujours utilis\u00e9 avec parcimonie (mais avec beaucoup de brio) les effets modernistes. On se souvient des magistrales s\u00e9quences en split-screen de <em>L\u2019Etrangleur de Boston<\/em> en 1968 bien avant Brian De Palma et m\u00eame Robert Aldrich. Ici le zoom et le grand-angulaire,\u00a0ainsi que la texture ocre et sombre de l\u2019image, accentuent la violence et le climat de d\u00e9composition et de corruption g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e du film. La photographie du film est sign\u00e9e Richard H. Kline, qui travailla avec Fleischer sur deux de ses meilleurs films,<em> L\u2019Etrangleur de Boston<\/em> et <em>Soleil vert, <\/em>ainsi que sur d&rsquo;autres titres majeurs du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain des ann\u00e9es 70 (<em>Les Guerriers de l&rsquo;enfer<\/em>, <em>Furie<\/em>&#8230;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mandingo<\/em> est \u00e9dit\u00e9 par Studiocanal en combo Blu-ray et DVD dans la collection Make My Day ! dirig\u00e9e par Jean-Baptiste Thoret.
