Sollima \u00e9tait un excellent cin\u00e9aste d\u2019action et un homme dot\u00e9 d\u2019une grande conscience morale. Il savait qu\u2019il travaillait dans le circuit commercial mais se refusait \u00e0 mettre en sc\u00e8ne des films en contradiction avec ses convictions humanistes. C\u2019est en partie la raison pour laquelle sa filmographie est beaucoup moins pl\u00e9thorique que celle d\u2019autres r\u00e9alisateurs italiens.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ses meilleurs films (<em>Colorado<\/em>, <em>Le Dernier Face-\u00e0-face<\/em>, <em>La Poursuite implacable<\/em>) s\u2019inscrivent dans les genres \u00e0 la mode de l\u2019\u00e9poque (western, polar urbain) tout en proposant des paraboles politiques d\u2019une puissance remarquable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Le Dernier Face-<\/em><em>\u00e0<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>face<\/em> raconte le r\u00e9cit initiatique d\u2019un professeur moribond (Gian Maria Volont\u00e8) qui au contact de l\u2019Ouest sauvage et d\u2019un bandit bestial (Tomas Milian, une nouvelle fois grandiose apr\u00e8s son interpr\u00e9tation g\u00e9niale dans <em>Colorado<\/em>) retrouve force et sant\u00e9 mais d\u00e9veloppe \u00e9galement un go\u00fbt malsain pour la violence qui le conduira au fascisme. Tandis que dans un mouvement dialectique le hors-la-loi n\u2019ob\u00e9it plus seulement \u00e0 son instinct de survie et s\u2019humanise au contact de l\u2019intellectuel. <em>Le Dernier Face-<\/em><em>\u00e0<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>face<\/em> est une \u00e9pop\u00e9e lyrique doubl\u00e9e d\u2019une fable politique sur la violence individuelle et la violence d\u2019\u00c9tat. Il faut envisager le chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre de Sollima comme le contrepoint ironique \u2013 et beaucoup plus subtil \u2013 des fictions de gauche qui dominaient le cin\u00e9ma d\u2019auteur italien de l\u2019\u00e9poque (les films de Petri, Rosi\u2026) et qui voulaient dresser le constat de la crise sociopolitique du pays. On a depuis fustig\u00e9 le manich\u00e9isme de ces \u0153uvres de d\u00e9nonciation construites sur un processus d\u2019identification du spectateur \u00e0 un personnage t\u00e9moin (juge, journaliste, dans le film de Sollima le professeur humaniste). Sollima inverse et complexifie ce sch\u00e9ma narratif, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un sc\u00e9nario maquill\u00e9 en \u00ab\u00a0m\u00e9taphore politique tr\u00e8s astucieuse\u00a0\u00bb comme le note Serge Daney dans <em>La Rampe<\/em>. Daney soulignait l\u2019intelligence de \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019admirable spaghetti-western de Sergio Sollima, <em>Le Dernier Face-<\/em><em>\u00e0<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>face<\/em>, o\u00f9 un tel m\u00e9canisme \u2013 je vois, donc je prends conscience \u2013 est perverti et ridiculis\u00e9 \u00e0 force d\u2019\u00e2tre r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9 tout au long du film.\u00a0\u00bb Ceux qui fustigent le simplisme de western italien doivent donc d\u00e9couvrir ce <em>Dernier Face-<\/em><em>\u00e0<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>face<\/em>, qui rejoint les chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre trop m\u00e9connus d\u2019une histoire transversale du cin\u00e9ma italien.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Le Dernier Face-\u00e0-face<\/em> est \u00e9dit\u00e9 par Wild Side (le 4 juillet) dans un coffret collector DVD et Blu-ray qui propose la version int\u00e9grale italienne, bien plus belle et longue que celle exploit\u00e9e en France au moment de sa sortie, tronqu\u00e9e en affubl\u00e9e d\u2019un titre ridicule (<em>Il \u00e9tait une fois en Arizona<\/em>). Le montage italien renforce la richesse et la densit\u00e9 romanesque d\u2019un film \u00e0 la mise en sc\u00e8ne constamment inspir\u00e9e, port\u00e9e par l\u2019extraordinaire colonne sonore de Ennio Morricone.
