Si <em>L\u2019Homme de la loi<\/em> \u00e9tait un film MGM tourn\u00e9 au Mexique, <em>Les Collines de la terreur<\/em> est une coproduction entre les Etats-Unis et l\u2019Europe, tourn\u00e9e en Andalousie dans les paysages d\u00e9sertiques d\u2019Almer\u00eda, d\u00e9cor de pr\u00e9dilection des westerns italiens de Leone, Sollima ou Corbucci. Cette d\u00e9localisation s\u2019explique par la pr\u00e9sence de Charles Bronson au g\u00e9n\u00e9rique, qui \u00e9tait devenu une vedette internationale en acc\u00e9dant aux premiers r\u00f4les dans une s\u00e9rie de films fran\u00e7ais, anglais ou italiens r\u00e9alis\u00e9s entre 1968 et 1972. <em>Les Collines de la terreur<\/em> sera d\u2019ailleurs l\u2019un des derniers films tourn\u00e9s loin du sol am\u00e9ricain par Bronson. L\u2019acteur r\u00e9int\u00e9grera les productions hollywoodiennes la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e que <em>Les Collines de la terreur<\/em> avec un autre film r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Winner, <em>Le Flingueur<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dans <em>Les Collines de la terreur<\/em>, Charles Bronson plus taiseux que jamais (une dizaine de mots prononc\u00e9s en anglais, espagnol ou langue indienne) incarne Chato, un m\u00e9tis Apache qui va \u00e9liminer gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019art de la guerre indien et sa parfaite connaissance de la nature sauvage \u2013 son territoire &#8211; les vigiles venus l\u2019arr\u00eater pour un crime commis en \u00e9tat de l\u00e9gitime d\u00e9fense (il a abattu dans la premi\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne du film un sh\u00e9rif qui le provoquait.) Comme dans <em>L\u2019Homme<\/em> <em>de la loi<\/em> \u00e9crit par le m\u00eame sc\u00e9nariste Gerald Wilson, la fronti\u00e8re entre justice et vengeance est brouill\u00e9e. <em>Les Collines de la terreur<\/em> est un film particuli\u00e8rement nihiliste et cruel. La plupart des Blancs sont montr\u00e9s comme des racistes d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s tandis que le h\u00e9ros indien, refusant le statut de victime ou d\u2019opprim\u00e9, se comporte en v\u00e9ritable tueur de sang froid, prenant vraisemblablement du plaisir \u00e0 ce jeu de massacre qu\u2019il ma\u00eetrise \u00e0 la perfection. De fugitif, Chato se transforme rapidement en chasseur, usant de subterfuges pour d\u00e9courager ses poursuivants dans un premier temps, puis pour les \u00e9liminer l\u2019un apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre apr\u00e8s le viol collectif de sa femme, utilis\u00e9e comme app\u00e2t par la brigade men\u00e9e par un ancien officier sudiste (Jack Palance) et un fermier visc\u00e9ralement raciste. Le film de Winner peut revendiquer un certain r\u00e9alisme \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019instar du <em>Fureur apache<\/em> de Robert Aldrich r\u00e9alis\u00e9 la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, notamment dans la description des tortures pratiqu\u00e9es par les deux camps. Mais des images dignes du cin\u00e9ma d\u2019horreur \u00ab\u00a0gore\u00a0\u00bb rapprochent \u00e9galement le film des exc\u00e8s du western italien alors moribond. Winner a fr\u00e9quemment exprim\u00e9 dans ses films des tendances sadiques, avec une pr\u00e9dilection assum\u00e9e pour les sc\u00e8nes de morts violentes. Bronson, alors \u00e2g\u00e9 de 50 ans, est impressionnant dans un r\u00f4le tr\u00e8s physique. Chato abandonne peu \u00e0 peu les oripeaux de la civilisation blanche pour finir le film quasiment nu, v\u00eatu d\u2019un seul pagne qui d\u00e9voile son corps muscl\u00e9 et sec.
