Il s\u2019\u00e9loigne de l\u2019Italie, s\u2019embarque pour des aventures aussi c\u00e9r\u00e9brales que g\u00e9ographiques, et des exp\u00e9riences in\u00e9dites o\u00f9 les innovations techniques sid\u00e9rantes (le fameux avant-dernier plan s\u00e9quence \u00e0 360 degr\u00e9s de <em>Profession : reporter<\/em>, o\u00f9 la cam\u00e9ra s\u2019envole par la fen\u00eatre d\u2019une chambre d\u2019h\u00f4tel dans un long mouvement a\u00e9rien) s\u2019accompagnent d\u2019un ton de plus en plus d\u00e9senchant\u00e9. <em>Zabriskie Point<\/em> (1970) part \u00e0 la rencontre de la jeunesse contestataire am\u00e9ricaine mais aussi des immensit\u00e9s d\u00e9sertiques de la Vall\u00e9e de la Mort, regard d\u2019un artiste Italien sur les \u00c9tats-Unis, sa soci\u00e9t\u00e9 consum\u00e9riste mais aussi son cin\u00e9ma. Le film est une variation sur <em>La Mort aux trousses<\/em>, et l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Antonioni entretient avec celle d\u2019Hitchcock une \u00e9trange et fascinante relation qui pourrait r\u00e9sumer celle qui lie le cin\u00e9ma moderne au cin\u00e9ma classique. Cette relation se poursuit avec <em>Profession : reporter<\/em> (<em>The Passenger<\/em>, 1975), sur lequel plane une nouvelle fois l\u2019ombre de La Mort aux trousses. Le titre fran\u00e7ais du film d\u2019Hitchcock colle litt\u00e9ralement \u00e0 celui d\u2019Antonioni, \u00e0 une inversion pr\u00e8s : ce n\u2019est pas la mort qui poursuit le personnage central, mais le h\u00e9ros paradoxal de cette aventure m\u00e9taphysique qui s\u2019achemine lentement vers une disparition progressive, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 un effacement total, une mort \u00e0 la fois r\u00e9elle et symbolique. Le film d\u2019Antonioni illustre \u00e0 la perfection la crise de l\u2019image-action th\u00e9oris\u00e9e par Deleuze. Les p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties du thriller d\u2019espionnage et de la course poursuite qu\u2019auraient pu inspirer cette fuite \u00e0 travers l\u2019Europe, aboutissent au contraire \u00e0 une m\u00e9ditation lente sur la qu\u00eate et la perte de soi, la fin des id\u00e9aux politiques, le climat de violence autour des trafics d\u2019armes et des guerres postcoloniales, au gr\u00e9 d\u2019une intrigue opaque et volontairement elliptique. Souvent d\u00e9sign\u00e9 comme un cin\u00e9aste de la f\u00e9minit\u00e9, Antonioni s\u2019attache dans <em>Profession : reporter<\/em> \u00e0 un personnage masculin, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 avec sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 par Jack Nicholson, assez g\u00e9nial dans le registre \u2013 \u00e9tonnant chez lui \u2013 de l\u2019underacting. Dans l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Antonioni Profession : reporter fait \u00e9cho \u00e0 un titre ant\u00e9rieur, <em>Le Cri<\/em>, qui racontait aussi l\u2019errance d\u2019un homme ayant largu\u00e9 les amarres, et d\u00e9veloppait un esth\u00e9tique du temps mort qui allait devenir le signe de reconnaissance de l\u2019\u00e9criture cin\u00e9matographique du cin\u00e9aste.<\/p>\n<p>Chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre absolu, aboutissement d\u2019ann\u00e9es de r\u00e9flexions et de voyages, <em>Profession : reporter <\/em>est aussi le film le plus lumineux et sensuel d\u2019Antonioni, m\u00eame si la mort y r\u00f4de du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin. Antonioni adopte le point de vue de son personnage et enregistre la beaut\u00e9 ensoleill\u00e9e des paysages d\u2019Afrique ou d\u2019Espagne. Le film est presque enti\u00e8rement tourn\u00e9 en ext\u00e9rieurs et d\u00e9cors naturels, tirant un parti exceptionnel des lieux d\u00e9serts et de l\u2019urbanisme \u2013 les b\u00e2timents de Gaud\u00ed \u00e0 Barcelone par exemple. Le regard de peintre et d\u2019architecte d\u2019Antonioni se pose sur une mati\u00e8re vivante et documentaire. La sophistication de la mise en sc\u00e8ne d\u2019Antonioni, la beaut\u00e9 constante des plans n\u2019emp\u00eachent pas un sentiment de libert\u00e9 et de l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 qui correspond \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de voyage et de fuite qui traverse le film. Le projet d\u2019\u00e9change d\u2019identit\u00e9 du reporter, poursuivi \u00e0 la fois par des tueurs et la curiosit\u00e9 de sa femme, est vou\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chec, mais il parvient, un bref moment \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0devenir lui-m\u00eame\u00a0\u00bb en volant la vie d\u2019un autre, \u00e0 go\u00fbter \u00e0 la libert\u00e9 v\u00e9ritable et d\u00e9couvrir, comme le notait Alberto Moravia au sujet du film, que l\u2019homme n\u2019existe vraiment qu\u2019en dehors de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Profession : reporter<\/em> ressort mercredi 26 juillet, distribu\u00e9 par Park Circus.
